Re: Panasonic launch the G9 and 200mm f2.8 lens

The man-machine interface does indeed set the size of objects to be used by humans - the science behind it being anthropometrics. Using the upper and lower quartile is usually taken as the size constraint for operating machines and their control. There's BS specs on this, and similar in Japan I would have thought. There's no point designing a man machine interface if you need hands the size of an infant, or at the other extreme the hand size of a 7'-2" giant.
So no matter how small the sensor, eg the camera phone, it needs to operated by humans, comfortably.

I remember at last year's Photography Show I picked up the GH5 and my first impression (coming from the E-M1ii) was "wow - this is BIG". The G9 looks actually slightly bigger than the GH5 in some dimensions, although it's slightly lighter, which is something I guess. I thought that the GX8 was too big too. However, each to his own - these aren't bodies I'd buy but I'm sure it'll work for many and I'm equally sure that it'll produce some lovely images.

Exactly the same reaction from me.

That 200mm/2.8 is tempting but that price tag it carries is a major deterrent. Thankfully for that too.

Re: Panasonic launch the G9 and 200mm f2.8 lens

That Panasonic 200 needs to be a *lot* better IQ than a used copy of the wonderful Oly FT 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 to justify costing about 8 or 10 times the price, while being bigger, heavier and less versatile on focal length. I guess in its favour it's 2/3 of a stop faster at 200mm and may have quicker AF. But my car cost less than that lens.

Is it not closer to x2 the price? £2699 for the 200 f/2.8 and £1299 for 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 SWD + MMF-3 (£170). Granted the 50-200 is a stunning lens (I've had two of them in the past).

Hiya. I didn't realise new copies of the 50-200 were still available. I was thinking of the cost of a used copy (which - to be fair - isn't comparing like with like, but it is comparing two possible buying choices).

Re: Panasonic launch the G9 and 200mm f2.8 lens

Even the Pana 200 pales into insignificance compared with the longer Canon and Nikon primes, where your'e looking at even 5 figure prices in some cases! Canon 600mm f4 £10,799 at Wex in the Black Friday sale! You can buy even a new car for that money. How do you justify it? Frankly, I don't know. I've been agonizing over the 50-200, but it's rather heavy for me nowadays; and the 40-150 is too much to justify, even used.

75-300 might suit you then; affordable, petite and light, weather-sealed and pretty good IQ. Needs good light as aperture isn't wide, but excellent value.

Not sure about the weather-sealing on the 75-300, Rob. Should be easy enough to check, and may not be a significant factor anyway.

Sorry, not weather sealed but still a small lens for its reach & produces nice results, although requires sufficient light.

Yes - sorry about that. Not weather sealed. Getting it mixed up with 14-150 which is. I'll treat my 75-300 with extra care now. 14-150 is on long term loan to a friend. (Prefer my FT 12-60 as a walkaround zoom)

Re: Panasonic launch the G9 and 200mm f2.8 lens

I think the lens is interesting. At last, the MFT makers are seeing the potential market from birders and other long tele users. If you think the price is high, look at the Canon 400mm f/4 (£6,500) and then look at the size and weight.
