Faye's Underground Home

Welcome back to Coober Pedy, the Opal Capital of Australia!
This is the homely entrance to what must surely be among the most unique dwellings in the country.

1.
The home is incredibly large and so ingeniously hand sculptured from rock by an
amazing woman who went to Coober Pedy to mine opal many years ago, but at first not taken seriously by men.
2.
Faye soon showed what she was made of and quickly earned the respect of the whole community.
3.
To avoid the searing summertime temperatures and icy cold winter nights,
about 80% or the town's white community also live in underground homes, called dugouts.
4.

Aboriginals do not like living underground, which they call the Spirit World.
5.
... and maybe they have a good point there!
6.
The home is tastefully furnished and the master bedroom also features a walk in wardrobe!
7.
Then there's the cosy and charming guest bedroom
8.
A closer look at the Master Bedroom
9.
I was the fifth member of a group of 5 who did a well presented tour by the lessee who lives there with his wife and maintains the home for its owner
10.
And finally, no home in the outback is complete without a swimming pool, this one is upstairs at ground level!
11.

Wow a very special building thanks for showing this home, the floors really caught my eye. A lot of work has gone into this dwelling.

Thanks Pete - it was an eye opener for me also. I did visit an underground home in Coober Pedy back in the 70's, but it was not on this scale. There's also an underground church that is quite an attraction and it was remiss of me not to have visited it when I had the chance, but time was pressing.

Re: Faye's Underground Home

Absolutely amazing, if true, to think this was done by one person then it's no wonder she gained the respect by all who knew her.

Your comment on the underground church has reminded me of a trip from many, many years ago - apologies if this hijacks your thread.

Some years ago when I was invited to Poland by an RAF friend, I was shown around a similar type structure... not quite a one person job but equally impressive never-the-less.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine in the south of Poland near Krakow, has to be seen to be believed. Back then when I were a lad, ;-) = much younger and fairly fit, I was cream crackered when I came out but was well worth the effort.

.....
I suspect she was the architect but am sure she would have attracted many willing helpers - they story told by our hosts is that she became a leading community figure.

No Chevvy, I was not responsible for that particular Sunset!

Nice. It looks like a kind of Aussie version of the late César Manrique's pad, on Lanzarote (now that man must have hosted some awesome cocktail parties). Swimming pool looks a bit small though.

Maybe this is the reason the pool is a bit small, Internaut ,,,
