Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Opilio canestrinii female

These images were in a subfolder from 2015 and had not been processed. A species I had not found before.

The male lacks the patterning on the body.

EM-1, probably Oshiro 60mm.

The stereo is crosseye.

Excellent image of Common Darters. In the Ruddy Darter the entire side of the female thorax is yellow and the male has red patches extending further back on the wing bases and more intense and even red on the abdomen.

Don't want/need to be too specific, but it looks tho' the lady is collecting the magic ingredient, rather than having it placed by the male...…...

I was under the impression that the male had his dangly bits at the end of the "tail"...

Another Woodwalton Dragonfly, a Three Winged Hawker (which perhaps explains why it didn't scarper as I removed vegetation from in front of it).

But which Hawker?

Mating Green Shield-bugs

I saw these on 9 June.

The stereo is crosseye.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/60 at f11, hand-held.

Brown Hawker Aeshna grandis Laying Eggs

I wanted to see some late summer dragonflies. This visit to Decoy Heath, Pond 1, showed the diversity to be down. I was about to move on when a Hawker flew across the water towards me. (I saw one later, at the stream but it never settled in view).

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm, 1/400 at f9.

I think they lay in the stems under the water and the shot on top of the leaf suggests a pause to rest.

I have a copy of the official records for the reserve and the last time this species was recorded there was in August 2014. So seeing it laying eggs there is encouraging.
