I guess we'll eventually find out but his last reply to someone was, "You will see two small <cameras> in 2019. You will smile when you see them."

Seriously, IMO the answer to this depends on the definition of "as good", especially to whom. For out & out professionals and perhaps fanatical semi-pros, a FF DSLR system would be ideal. But for ordinary enthusiasts like me, the MFT system does have many advantages including better affordability, portability and in many cases practicality. As has been mentioned before, the doubled DOF of the MFT system can be advantageous in most non-portrait settings.

I think I will wait for this

https://www.43rumors.com/ft5-olympus...-on-the-e-m1x/

the EM1-X is looking less and less attractive for my needs.

Well, I guess we'll need to wait for the final announcement, but I sort of agree. For me, I dislike built in grips so unless there is a really big improvement in IQ I can't see me getting this. Hand held hi res might tempt me, but I guess that would need global shutter?

That's not for me either. Never use the extra grip I've got!

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

I only got the grip (for E-M5 Mk1) as it came with the pre-order and I thought it would be useful to plug in a power supply (for star tracking). Then I found out the cost of the power supply.

I'm more interested in the "two new small cameras, you will smile" bit ...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

If Olympus deliver usable and useful hand held high res mode, then we can safely say that would be a game changer for some. Sensor shift isn’t necessarily just about resolution, of course. Olympus have a number of possibilities with this technology, especially if global shutter (on top of a possibly oversized sensor?) is used.

Does that sound like fantasy? Well.... if we assume Olympus wants to charge three grand, for a small format body, then it had better be revolutionary? The size argument will only get them so far....

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Tony Northrup believes the E-M1X makes a lot of sense

The other week he asserted u4/3 is dead. I must admit he has some talent making money.

But not much else! I've avoided his stuff before, but I did watch that segment and he came out with some drivel about how Olympus needed to change their AF systems because their lenses were designed to only work with Contrast Detection .....

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

LOL. Reminds me when he or his wife tested the EM5.2 hi-res picture feature During the test they used a Panasonic lens and then when reviewing the pictures he or she complained about the image quality and stated that "Olympus need to make better lenses".

Edit: here is the video on YouTube. Fast forward to around 1:30

Just plain stupid! Did she ever think about what she was saying? And "glass matters!" - who would have guessed it before these words of wisdom dripped from her (agreeable) mouth?

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

So Olympus are effectively doubling down on the smaller format... It could work, if they put enough compelling tech into the bodies. But it is against the run of play. Full frame is just very fashionable at the moment.

Incidentally, I’ve been mucking about with the JPEG engines of my Olympus and Sony cameras over the past week in Lanzarote. The verdict? Well, I have JPEGs out of the E-P5, taken in awkward lighting (think narrow streets in the late afternoon) which are simply impossible with the Sony. Sony’s DRO is simply inferior to Olympus Auto Gradiation (and often downright unhelpful). This reliability of output is one of the strengths Olympus need to be playing to.
