Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

C-AF lock is the control of the sensitivity of the focusing to change - it's like a dampening factor. Off means it's at its most sensitive so it's more likely to grab focus but also more likely to lose focus. By 'Standard' I think they mean 'Normal' in the menu.

Andy is probably the UK's (world's?) authority on using Olympus cameras for BIF. He has a spreadsheet stuffed with data and settings for different applications of autofocusing He's a commercial scientist by trade and also works with a company that raises and trains birds of prey for show and he runs tutorials on photographing them too. He is on the forum here as oly_om. Try to find some of his shots especially of owls in flight - remarkable.

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

From yesterday too - quite a bit further away and this is a 5MP crop:

It's dropped a bit of its loaf

And ten frames later:

Desperate acrobatics to retrieve the lost piece while it's still dropping (but it failed).

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Thanks for this thread and the subsequent updates Ian.

Would it be possible for you to include a concise list of recommended settings for us using C-AF for BIF following the firmware 3.0 upgrade?

I've read a few conflicting recommendations regarding C-AF lock, EVF settings, etc., it would be very useful to hear the recommendations of those who've had some success and/or experience of using this mode for BIF.

Thanks again.

Dave

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Ian I will be interesting how you consider the the new firmware works with 4/3rds lens. I was hoping the new firmware would have been released before last weekend as I attended two rally's. I did one on an old airfield with space for panning and the other in a North Yorkshire forest with more corner and head on shots. I still don't have the confidence in the E-M1 to leave the E-5 at home. I was using 35-100 on E-M1 and 50-200 SWD on the E-5 mainly. Although I did swap the lens for a short period.

Before SW update 2 I think a absolutely hated the E-M1 as with most 4/3rds lens it wouldn't stop hunting. Whereas with the E-5 you could select a point mid corner ready for the next car and it would stay in focus the E-M1 wouldn't.

As the only m4/3 lens I own are 12-50 and 70-300 mk2, I would like to know how you consider the C-AF performance is with 4/3rds lens.

Smile Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Ian sorry for delay getting back missed this thread. I am keen? on a 40 - 150mm 2.8f and 1.4 converter. I am even considering selling off my four thirds kit but want to wait until I have tried the lens out and also to see what four thirds lenses to keep as I still have quite a few. Have not tried the bigma or Sigma 135 - 400 since the firmware upgrade to 3.0, but have seen good reports on the 50 - 200mm. Since my latest hospital visit I have not got out much further than the garden. I have the 75 - 300 mm purchased with the voucher from last years show at the NEC.
Hope to see you on the Monday at the show with the shop soiled lens for me to try; it must be reduced !!

Will there be any kit to try at the show? Any time scale or prices for the 300mm or the 7 - 14mm lenses?

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Woohoo, sunshine and blue skies aplenty this morning in Hemel Hempstead Will be out later this morning to do some more local bird chasing (pardon the expression) with the 50-200, 90-250 and 300 2.8...

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Ooohhh, will be interested to hear how you get on with that lot. Any chance you could try the EC-14 with the 50-200 as well?

Good luck, enjoy the sunshine.

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Just back from playing with the 50-200 SWD, didn't bring an EC-14, sorry. If it wasn't for a passing Red Kite I might have come home almost empty handed as the local avian population were mostly in hiding!

And I did find one obliging gull:

I do feel that the E-M1 was able to hang on to the subject's focus better although the 50-200 was more difficult to prevent hunting than the 75-300. But once the subject is on focus it holds on better than before.

One thing to note is that you won't get the full 10fps with apertures smaller than wide open; it's more like 6fps at a guess. And these are small crops - 1/5th of the original frame.

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Thanks You Ian, so it is a success with 50-200 SWD. Do you plan to try any other 4/3rds lens.
I haven't got any Motorsport planned until British Siperbike test day at Donington Park late in March.
Will update the firmware and give it try.
I intend on taking 90-250 and 50-200 SWD. 35-100 not long enough for Donington Park.

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Now I've gone & done it!

I hope I don't get stung on this one as it is coming from Japan, but I've bought a used Oly 50-200 SWD lens that appears to be quite good. I hope so! It hurts now our Australian dollar is down so much as it would otherwise have been even better at US603 (postage included) if our dollar was much closer to the US$ (as it was 2 years ago).

I noticed there was one in the UK as well.
