Cool New site features coming up

From next week and during the rest of the month we will be adding some new features to the site.

1. Top featured gallery images on the front page. Gallery images that have a rating of 8 or higher will be randomly shown on the front page of the site. In preparation for this, it would be great if we could have more images rated - it's very easy, just visit the gallery and have a nose around and rate any pictures you feel deserve your feedback - and you can leave comments too.

2. Latest gallery images on your user profile page. Thumbnails of your latest gallery images will be shown on your user profile page.

3. Front page links to hot forum threads. I'll be on the look out for really interesting forum threads and these will be linked independently of the latest threads so that they will remain visible and more easily accessible for longer.

4. Revised smileys - long overdue

5. Video clip tutorials to help you get used to many of the handy features of the forum and the gallery.

If you have any other suggestion for enhancing the site, I'm all ears - though I can't promise to implement everything.

Ian

How about this... You know the menu you get when you click on a uses name in the post (eg if I clicked on Ian int he top left of your post here), any chance of having a direct link to the users gallery there?
Regardless, looking forward to the changes

Can I just say I will wecome any attempts to importune me from 'young' ladies with a pair of big lenses and a liking for being wet, cold and scared (sailing).

Oh and off-topic - I think the proposed site changes sound great

Great ideas Ian. They should help to make the site grow faster.

Will certainly lift the site above the level of the usual 'forum'. Looking forward to it too

How about a Technical category. Many people ask on how to do certain things with the site software and sometimes need a quick simple answer.

OK, I'll put that on the to-do list

Re: New site features coming up

Ian

I am glad you are trying to improve the site. It is good now but can always be improved. So being specific: I try to spend time in the gallery in two different ways.

1. Randomly finding interesting things and commenting. It would be good to have the system learn what I like and help bring me more of that (like amazon). Or at least offer more stuff that isn't just based on popular or new (perhaps folks could build favourites lists of others - alongside their comments).

2. I try to follow friends. I thought marking people as buddies might help this but I don't think it does. I'd like to follow some people who post subjects I like and or I just get on with and like to encourage. Individuals galleries are hard to follow, unless I missed something. Can you bookmark them?

Anything that helps those would be wonderful.

Re: New site features coming up

Hi Ian

Here's a few suggestions I have thought of...

Navbar Gallery link: perhaps make this a drop down menu, with the following entries;
Gallery (as now)
My Gallery
Upload Photo
Top Rated Images
Todays Images

In the postbit area, when you click on a members username, it might be useful to have an additional link in there which takes the viewer to the members gallery. So, something like; View 'usernames' Gallery as an entry.

I don't think you necessarily need a link to both 'Home' and a link to 'Forum' when in the forum or on the Home page - it's a waste of navbar real estate. Perhaps use a conditional to show 'Home' when viewing the forum, and to show 'Forum' when on the home page. The e-Group logo could redirect back to the home page.

Maybe in the forumhome area, some more of a description in the Camera Conference area to explain to visitors that one can post in that area too. At the moment, it looks as though one has to post in one of the specific camera model areas. I'd guess that a 'General' area such as 'Camera Conference' is in fact well underused - and perhaps should be one of the most widely used areas. Making it clear to people that 'Camera Conference' is indeed another category they can post in - would help significantly.

You might like to install the AuctionAds plug-in which allows you to make a small % commission from any eBay auctions won by the members here as a result of clicking on the link within the e-group forum. The buyer doesn't get charged any more, neither does the seller, in fact ebay pays a small commission through AuctionAds to you as the publisher. Win-win eh!

On the top of the Home Page header/logo, the rounded corners are white (as they were used on the forumhome which has a white background), this header/logo is now shown on the page with a grey background and therefore the rounded white corners show up more.

Perhaps introduce a new 'Articles' area where members can publish articles. This could feature reviews on all the E-system range of camera and lenses. It could also include links to where these can be purchased - which is another possible revenue opportunity for the site.

Include maybe a new roll-over navbar, but right at the top of the page with no margin i.e. against the top edge - which could possibly include some useful links to other sites such as FTU, DPNow, Olympus UK/US/RoW, as well as the possible new Articles section I suggested above.

How's that for a starter for 10...

Re: New site features coming up

A tiny point: it took me a while to realise that "User CP" meant "User Control Panel" and that was where I could follow "my" threads and update my profile/signature. Perhaps calling it "You" might be better? I also wonder if it might be possible to have a "My Threads" link from the front page?

The planned improvements already sound good, however!
