The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban...

... to give it the correct title, although often referred to locally as simply St Albans Abbey!

After a dreary couple of weeks' weather throughout Christmas/New Year, the forecast on the Saturday a week ago was for a crisp, sunny day, so Barrie and I decided to visit.

Unfortunately the good weather clashed with a weekend, which meant many other folk were also there and photography was not easy but here are a few from the day -

1. The Abbey Gatehouse -

The following three are all interior shots, taken dodging or cropping fellow visitors!

2.

A close up of the background to pic 2 -

3.

4.

All taken with the OM-D E-M10, 9-18 mm lens.

Regards,
Ann1e

Nice shots, I ought to go as I'm not so far away. I like the lighting on the altar in the last.

Hi Ann1e. Ornate is the word that sprang to mind here!
It must be an impressive place to visit and good that the weather gave you a chance to get out.

Great pictures, Churches Cathedrals and Abbeys are such a good subject for photography, with challenging indoor and outdoor opportunities.
Well done
Gary.

Re: The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban...

Thanks all for looking in and commenting.

I, personally, do not think the exterior of the Abbey is one of the most visually appealing but certainly there is much to see inside. As I mentioned in my original post, we visited at the weekend which was something of a mistake but it was the one good day, weather wise, we had that week. Barrie returned a few days later and had much greater access without constant groups of fellow visitors streaming across in front of him. I can't complain though, as I had a lovely 'girlie' lunch while he was out!

Regards,
Ann1e

Re: The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban...

Impressive photography of an impressive cathedral, Anne. Although I went to a C of E school and was for a very brief time a choir boy at the local cathedral, I confess I did not pay as much attention to scripture studies as I should have. So now I am wondering who the colourfully dressed figures in #3 might be. I see the 1st at left appears to be an Archbishop perhaps?

It's an interesting presentation you have put together, the amount of detail is staggering.

Cathedrals and churches always amaze me with the beauty of their construction. These show that to their full detail. Thanks, Annie.

Thanks for your comments, Mark. This prompted some research on my part -

So there you have it - modern history in the making!

Let's face it - it's downright ugly! It's a mishmash of styles and building materials. IIRC it was open to the sky in the 19th Century, but a local benefactor paid for the restoration. I also seem to recall being told that the faces of the saints on the screen are modelled on his mates!

Many thanks for your research, Anne. The chilling story of each of the seven martyrs is fascinating indeed, and what an amazing commission undertaken by artist sculptor, Rory Young.

I note that St Alban Roe was hanged for treason in 1642 after being found guilty of being a Roman Catholic priest, the same year that Dutch navigator Abel Janz Tasman discovered Tasmania and named it Van Dieman's Land. Being a native Taswegian myself, there's my connection to St Alban's Cathedral, a rather tenuous one I admit!.
