Super FP Mode with OM-D E-M5

I have discovered that the E-M5 allows the use of high speed flash synchronisation if Super FP Mode is selected on the FL50 (and FL50R) flashguns.

This is really useful for fill-in flash in low sunlight, for example. The FL50 feels a bit oversized when fitted to the OM-D, but is not so bad if the grip is fitted. And I have a FL50 flash anyway.

I thought I would mention this as all the documentation I have read seems to suggest that maximum flash speed synchronisation is limited to just 1/250 second on the E-M5. Indeed, the flash speed will not go above 1/160 second with the flashgun fitted unless I select Super FP mode; which probably means that I need to find the flash speed setting buried deep in the Menu system somewhere.

However, this raises a question: Which other flashguns (if any) provide high speed flash synchronization (Super FP Mode) on E System and E-M System cameras?

I have looked at the specifications of the FL600R on various dealers' websites, but none seem to provide any information about this aspect.

Re: Super FP Mode with OM-D E-M5

I have the Metz 50-AF1 and it supports ETTL and HSS on both Panasonic and Oly cameras where they do. It works fine. This is indeed in the manual the last time I checked, maybe I wasn't looking for it and thats why I found it, it's usually that way around.

Get a grip! I mean a Flash Bracket. They are not expensive and makes the combined weight easier to manipulate and puts the flash head further away from the lens axis.

Yes, that's a good idea; but I would need the synch lead as the FL50 isn't wireless.

well it also works with the FL36 and on all E and Pen models - so I would be amazed if the E-M5 somehow didn't.

it's a flash mode rather than a camera one, and basically requires the flash gun to cycle it's flash over (I think) 1/30th of a sec period, within which the shutter operates as usual at whatever speed you require. Flash output in this mode is via the emited light rather than the flash period as applies in normal flash modes.

You can use a Canon Synch lead, which are more easier to find and cheap on Ebay. Also the FL-36 has the Super FP mode also.

Re: Super FP Mode with OM-D E-M5

Thanks guys.

I didn't realise that the FL36 had Super FP Mode.

Does anyone know about the FL20, as that one is quite compact, and a little more powerful than the gun bundled with the E-M5?

Steve
Will TTL and HSS work with a canon lead as well?

there are many Canon cords - you need the right one.

from memory it's the Canon off camera shoe cord - 2 or some combination of those words!

I am not sure wireless would work her as it is requires line of sight

If there are light coloured walls I have known out of sight flashes to RC normally via reflection.

Super FP is common on flash units these days, for most brands. You will see a big loss in brightness or 'power' though.

Indeed Ian, any HSS flash just keeps pumping out lower powered continuous lighting for as long as the shutter is open so you get the "sync" at any shutter speed.
