W10 peek-a-boo for Junes update

What's new in the next update sequence... ? https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/22/1...eatures-review

As W7 nears it's demise I, like some others are possibly being left with no other option but to upgrade. Found this W10 May 2019 article and some of my dislikes are seemingly being brought on-line... reducing unwanted crapperoony.

Can only hope the trend continues.

Re: W10 peek-a-boo for Junes update

Good news, I will now be able to get rid of the slow, bloated Groove Music, Photos and Movies & TV apps, the latter two of which crash one of my PCs as soon as they're launched due to a video driver that AMD can't be bothered to update. I'll stick with Windows Photo Viewer and Media Player, thanks .

Unfortunately, if you want Windows, there's no choice.

I love, and have been very happy with Win7, but I have to change to Win10, no doubt and no question, it has to be done. unfortunately.

Windows 10 has eventually evolved into the most stable operating system ever provided by Microsoft.

Install it, keep an open mind, turn off everything you don't want or need, give it a fair chance and enjoy. Most importantly, don't be influenced by those who would complain about and knock the system no matter how it performed. Unfortunately, those sad individuals will always be with us. Complaining is a way of life for them.

I remember similar scare stories about Window 2000 and Xp. Windows 2000 was one of my favourite OS's in its day, and was very stable. Xp was slated at launch but now, nearly twenty years later, Microsoft still cannot wean users away from it!

I love steam locomotives but I don't know if I would want to travel in a train hauled by one every day to work.

There is an independent (of Microsoft) XP group which, I am told, is thriving.

This might be it:

Xp was good in its day but I don't know why anyone would chose it today over later operating systems. Xp is also incredibly slow!

Windows 7 is much better than Xp but is getting a little dated now and is slower than later OS's.

Windows 8.1 is probably still my favourite but the more I use Windows 10 the more I like it.

I put off moving to Windows 10 for as long as possible but now I have taken the jump I really like it. Edge is particularly good, and much better than Chrome in my view.

Don't be afraid of Windows 10. It really is very good now.

Nigel,

My experience of moving to W10 was much like yours. However, I dislike Edge and, as for directing me to Bing for a search engine!

You can still install Chrome if you really want to, but Edge is better and faster. Edge also provides a spellcheck dictionary that isn't thrown by primary school vocabulary.

You can change the default home screen and search engine options too.

I second that sentiment.

However, when the time comes and W10 is your only option... and as the free update offer passed its sell-by-date 2 years ago, this link can help.

Re: W10 peek-a-boo for Junes update

I was very reluctant to install W10 and put it off for a long as I could but I actually like it.

I have other machines running W7, W8.1 and Windows 2016 and find W10 works just fine. There are a few features that I miss from earlier versions such as the picture preview and 'Recent Places' (in Explorer), but it is very fast and stable.

Windows 10 is actually very similar to Windows 2016 (and Windows 2019 I believe) which is extremely stable, if up for months at a time.

The only downside is the lack of drivers for W10 which is a particular problem with older film scanners.

Recent files etc still exist in Explorer, maybe you need to enable them. The menu system in Explorer (And other Microsoft software) is pretty terrible, itís one of Windows worst features. Whatís Windows 2016? Mustíve missed that one! I havenít found W10 to be any faster but it is certainly pretty stable. Other than the driver issues I mentioned before I havenít had any blue screens. I got my old Nikon film scanner working under W10, search for the solution. If you canít find it Iíll point you at it next time Iím on my desktop rather than this iPad 🙂.

Re: W10 peek-a-boo for Junes update

W10 is quite good these days , certainly much better than it was when first launched. I wouldn’t go back to 7 now. I still have an XP partition on one of my PCs to run some old software and it feels antediluvian now! Ignore the W10 apps and clean up the start menu and it’s fine. The new update sounds as if it should make it more like the traditional Windows interface. We shall see ...

Re: W10 peek-a-boo for Junes update

My experience with Win 10 on a Windows Surface Book 2 is appalling. Stability is poor and there are glitches in everything from the keyboard to the power management. Junk. And to top it all, the UI is as ugly as sin. I'm not a fan of Apple's closed ecosystem, but my wife's Macbook Pro is the paradigm of beauty, simplicity and stability.
