Mellow evening picture

I was so frustrated today: Such nice weather, but stuck indoors at a computer screen. So I went out on a two lens wander this evening and this was the best of the bunch: An old farm gate in the last rays of the sun.

Re: Mellow evening picture

It's a nice shot Pete, the only thing that spoils it for me is the width of the 'frame' effect caused by the gate. If that were lightened up a tad, there'd be more detail to capture ones eye.

Well spotted though after your days frustrations.

I like this one a lot but share the same thoughts as a/m. I would suggest that if you have photoshop CS3 that you run the shadow/highlight which will allow you to bring out detail in the deep shadow ... other than that it is a very pleasant image.

Re: Mellow evening picture

I know what you mean Pete, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to get out and about.

I quite like the shot, as already highlighted the blacks are blocked so you might try to lighten, but most distractingly for me is the large patch of green to the left, it keeps drawing my eye away from the gate which is obviously the focal point.
Not really sure what to suggest, perhaps a crop to the LHS, alternatively a B&W conversion to bring out the detail in the wood?

Yes, its the large green patch that concerns me me most.. I have the day off (woo!) so I might give this a warm over and see what I can drag out of it

Re: Mellow evening picture

I actually like this as it is. I feel a large print would be most impressive - it has a warm feeling and the greens are just right.

Re: Mellow evening picture

It was a very pleasant evening, but this was almost the last shot, with the light starting to fail and me without my tripod (tut tut)..

OK, here is a slightly reworked version. Its an attempt to re-establish the centre of the image by dispersing that green background somewhat..

My greatest regret is that I didn't get both the post and the chain pin sharp. That would have needed a tripod..

Re: Mellow evening picture

I prefer the high contrast of the first shot. The detail in the second shot distracts me slightly! (but then I'm easily distracted...)
