Who uses & like Windows 8?

I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop to Win Pro 8, 64 bit from 32 bit Win7 (Pro) & have ordered the Windows Pro 8 Upgrade 64/32b disc (at a discount price) so I can run Capture One Pro 7 (or even just Express 7) which needs a 64 bit platform to run on. Another reason to do the upgrade is to make use of the 8GB of RAM that came installed in the laptop that cannot be used at present. I am not going to rush into doing this upgrade until I know all will be as desired & will just leave it in its box if it was a bad decision.

I need some helpful advice here please.

Re: Who uses & like Windows 8?

I'm a Mac user and find the whole UI very easy to navigate, I have used Windows up to Vista and Win 7, however I recently had cause to look at a relatives new machine because he couldn't get to grips with it and I just didn't find it friendly at all straight off the bat.

If it were me I'd upgrade to Win 7 64bit at least you'll be familiar with what you're navigating.

Re: Who uses & like Windows 8?

I've had Windows 8 on a couple of PCs for 7 or 8 months now (various reasons including future-proofing). Runs fine, there are a few visible improvements and I suspect more going on invisibly. Not feeling any strong urge to use touch when I have keyboeard/mouse available.

Don't personally understand the negative attitude so many people have to the tiles look/feel - I've personally no use for it and removed all the "apps". It boots up, I click on the desktop tile, or whatever I want to use, and away I go.

Tried a couple of "bring back the start button" applications and quickly discarded them.

My attitude - the OS is there to let you run applications, Windows 8 does that. Applications that require Windows 8 will arrive some day.

Re: Who uses & like Windows 8?

I happily use Win 8 and it's rock solid. But I seldom use the tiles. I have my applications on the bottom task bar. Since I use a twin-monitor setup it's easy to work it like this.

PS it sleeps and wakes easily, which is more than Win 7 did. I rarely power down.

Re: Who uses & like Windows 8?

Win8 sleeps and wakes quicker than anything I've ever seen : so for laptops a MODIFIED Win8 works great : by MODIFIED I actually mean "forced to behave more like Windows should behave" ... in its vanailla state I find it a candidate for throwing out the window every five minutes.

It is basicly designed for touch screen to appeal to the ipad and tablet crowd.

Why any photographer to who viewing quality is paramount would want to be constantly putting fingerprints on their screen is beyond me.

I have a touchscreen 23" PC desktop but the touchscreen is never used for that very reason.

Use a stylus supplied with Intous 4 and keep my screen clean

Re: Who uses & like Windows 8?

The biggest problem for most is the tiled start screen and the lack of a START button. This however will be dealt with with the Window BLUE update. W8 as is, is ideal for tablets with the touch screen but for general PC use it can be problematic... those who uses a touch screen have found it causes problems when having to keep reaching out to swipe or touch the screen, especially those who use it all day. As for fingerprints on the screen, it comes into it's own when solving W8 related crimes.

Forget Windows 8, the biggest disaster in that XP will be de-supported at the end of 2013.

XP had a good run but it's time for it to retire... there's nothing stopping you from continuing to use it if you really feel the need though.

Or Windows 8.1 as it is now known... remember that it will be available as a free update for Windows 8 users.

Re: Who uses & like Windows 8?

Thanks for all the replies (so far) & as much as they differ they are all appreciated. I won't be rushing to try it but at least I'll have the upgrade disc to use when I'm ready.

Re: Who uses & like Windows 8?

Hi there Ross!

I haven't used Windows 8 but my dad (IT bloke for the last 30 years or so) has put it on one of his computers and isn't particularly keen on it - to the point where he has found out that it won't let him "down-grade" back to Windows 7. Probably a good idea to have a back-up (a full mirror type) of your hard drive if you do up-grade just in case you want to revert.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Only winXP displays folder thumbnails properly (=usefully)... there is no fix for more modern Windows for people who actually like and use XP for their file/folder handling.
If XP was updated it would be awesome.
I'm holding out for Windows 9-ish, bring back functionality!
(I own Vista, win7 & Win8 on various machines. XP gets 95% of our time.)

Not sure what you mean Ulfric? Windows 7 can show the contents of the folders...

Horses for courses, I use 7 now and wouldn't want to go back!
