Re: Meeting in the Highlands?

I think we are heading towards finalizing this meet and reading back through the posts, it looks like being the weekend of the 11th & 12th with the Saturday looking favourite?
The next step is to set a time and a meeting point for us all to get together. I have the luxury of a very short journey to Glen Affric so will let those with further to travel decide the time.
As far as a place to meet I think there are 2 options:
1. we go straight to GA and meet at the first car park (Dog Falls) or
2. we meet in Cannich and confirm the destination
The reason for number 2 is that as you drive over the hill to Cannich from Drumnadrochit you get a great sense of the weather in the 3 local Glens - straight on for Glen Affric, 2 o'click(ish) for Glen Cannich (Mullardoch) and 4 o'clock(ish) for Glen Strathfarrar.
I am not certain about where in Cannich to meet up but there is space at the village hall and firestation(?) on the left just after the first few houses if coming from Drum if coming from Beauly turn left after the bridge with the traffic lights and it is about 1/2 a mile on the right.
Alternatively if everyone's route brings them through Drumnadrochit we can meet at my place and I'll put the kettle on
This all assumes that the GA area is the preferred destination!
Please posts your thoughts/suggestions and we can hopefully firm this up.
Look forward to meeting you all
Iain

Re: Meeting in the Highlands?

Looks like you have summarised this very well thanks Iain, and many thanks for the offer of a cuppa at your place

However, for me, if I were to drive/travel for at least 11 hours by road I would most certainly wish to continue on to the Isle of Skye itself and spend some quality time there. So, for me, I shall duck out of this meet up at this point as it seems the likely meeting point and photo location would be the highlands around GA. Though I am sure GA is gorgeous, it is Skye I have always wanted to visit.

Re: Meeting in the Highlands?

Either location suits me (GA or Skye although I must confess I do have a preference for Skye although I'd need to stay overnight and I imagine the B&B's may be busy if not already booked up), perhaps folk can nominate their preference then we can make a decision ASAP where to go.

If we go for GA then I'll take you up on the cuppa offer Iain :-)

Iain, thanks for your suggestions for the Highland Meet (and the offer of a 'cuppa'). I am really looking forward to a day's shooting with like-minded 'togs' and putting faces to some of the forum members hoping to make it! To that end I remain easy as to where we meet up but I feel that if John is prepared to drive that distance and really wants to see Skye then perhaps we should make Skye the location for this particular meet? Others also seem to have this as a preference. My worry with this is that Seonnaidh might have been looking forward to a day away from his 'own patch'? If you are happy, Seonnaidh, then perhaps you could offer a suitable meet location on Skye and post your list of local B and B's?
Many thanks.

Re: Meeting in the Highlands?

Righty Oh then.
Lets formalise the event as happening on Skye.
I live very near to a village called Carbost which is home to the only distillery on Skye which produces Talisker Whisky, so lets meet in the public car park
just past the distillery on the right. You can't miss it it is right on the shoreline.
Where I am located is right next to the Black Cuillin hills and we have several excellent landscape locations all within 15/20 minutes of here.
Below are the links to three B&B's that I can reccommend simply because I know the owners well.
(1) www.langal-skye.co.uk (Norma & Murray) Lovely local people.

(2) www.therowansonskye.com (Jenny & Nick) Very nice hospitable incomers.

(3) www.ardtreckcottage-skye.co.uk

(4) My wife and I. We have 1 double and 1 twin room with shared facilities.

If you would like to Google the following,
Fairy Pools Glenbrittle;
Talisker Bay;
Elgol (Elgol is about an hour from Carbost.
Carbost by the way has a very nice pub called the Old Inn. They serve well prepared evening meals and lunches, and also do B&B it might well be worth Googling them as well.
Cheers for now.

Re: Meeting in the Highlands?

Sounds good to me, I'll probably be coming on my own so I'll try to find a single room from one of the places you listed, staying at the pub is tempting as I can have a couple and not have to worry getting home lol.

Cheers,

Paul

Re: Meeting in the Highlands?

The odds are looking quite favourable that I may be able to attend. I will try to confirm as soon as possible. If I can go, I will bring a range of lenses and accessories as usual. I may have a surprise guest...

Re: Meeting in the Highlands?

Oooooh! A surprise guest,
Well in order of preference and for entirely different reasons I would like it to be;

Sophia Loren when she was about 30-35yrs Old,
David Bailey,
Virtually anyone from the entire worlds population,
The local VAT inspector (she's giving me a hard time)
Looking forward to seeing you all.
