Re: Hi from sunny Bedfordshire

Welcome!

Tips for the Pen-F (and most Olympus M43 cameras):

- Upgrade to firmware 2.1. There were stability issues on some cameras with earlier releases. Latest is 3.1. 3.0 introduced some useful new features that are worth having (esp if you use the JPEG modes).

- Quick sleep mode = off. "Cogs" menu K (utility). Quick sleep doesn't work too well and is known to cause stability problems.

- Keep warm color = off. "Cogs" menu G (Color/WB). I've no idea why Oly has the feature - it just results in horrible colour balance in artificial light.

- If you use mechanical shutter, use the anti-shock setting (diamond indicator) and set Release Lag-time = short (Cogs menu C). Anti-shock uses Electronic First Curtain Shutter (EFCS) and there's no downside to using it (reports of EFCS causing bokeh shifts or odd rendering of highlights on FF cameras don't evidence themselves on m43). It makes the shutter quieter and significantly reduces risk of shutter shock. Release lag=time = "short" changes the second shutter release from a solenoid to an electro-magnet. It further reduces risk of shutter shock (this has been demonstrated by controlled tests) at the expense of slightly higher power consumption.

- Use electronic shutter when you can (i.e. anytime except in artificial light or when there is fast subject movement). It's guaranteed to give no shutter shock and obviously reduces shutter wear to zero.

Hope that helps!
