EXPRO LCD Battery Charger died (replacement wanted)

I have 2 EXPRO battery chargers. 1 for my E-M5i and one for my E-PM2.

These are specifically the ones that have the LCD display for the battery level. It is only a 3 segment display; just enough to show flat, some charge, almost charged, and fully charged. But this is infinitely superior to the version that has just a single led light.

The charger is the "travel" version that has swapable mains plugs (UK, US, Europe) and a 12V input (plug in car lead supplied). The base unit accepts different "plates" configured for each battery type - the difference being the physical battery size and the location of the charging pins.

E-M5i plate on left and E-PM2 plate on right.

Showing the battery charge state.

The idea of having 2 (nearly) identical chargers is that I can charge batteries for both cameras at the same time and if one fails then I can swap the "plates" and still retain the abilty to charge both types of battery - just not at the same time. This is what has happened. One of the chargers will not work off the mains (blown switched mode power supply I presume) but does still work off 12V.

I have been looking for a replacement but nobody (including EXPRO) seems to stock the LCD version. The only one I can find is the single LED light version (light on/off). As an alternative EXPRO do make a slimline charger that runs off a 5V USB supply but this has a fixed "plate" (so I can not charge both types of batteries just by swapping the clip on adapter plate) and the charging rate is a lot slower.

Does anyone have one of the LCD display chargers that they wish to sell on, know where I may buy one, or have any alternative ideas on how to charge two different battery types (3 different types if I get the E-M5iii) with some redundancy if one charger fails without having to buy 2 chargers for each battery type?

Thanks.

Re: EXPRO LCD Battery Charger died (replacement wanted)

The newer chargers dispense with the back plate and use USB instead, as do many other things such as phones. I now have USB chargers, with LCD indicators, for the EM10ii and EM1ii. Many cars now have a USB output and if they don't you can get an adapter. In the house I use a 3 output USB plug with the standard 3 pin setting. If abroad I can plug it into whatever adapter is needed for the country. Overall it saves space, weight etc compared to the earlier system.

You still need a charger to charge one battery whilst you are out shooting with the other battery! The EXPRO mains powered chargers are "fast" chargers and take approximately 2 hours to charge a (EXPRO) battery from flat. I wait to hear how long it takes to charge the E-M5iii from a USB cable which can only supply half the power.

The BLS-50 of the E-M5iii and recent PENS/OM10 is the same physical size as the BLS-5 of the E-PM2 but rated at a higher capacity. Can the E-M5iii run off a BLS-5, and can a BLS-5 charger charge a BLS-50 to its higher capacity?

What make please?

So what do you do if a charger fails when on holiday? Do you have/take 2 chargers for each camera?

Re: EXPRO LCD Battery Charger died (replacement wanted)

I have two ExPro chargers for the BLH batteries for the EM1ii. One is used in the house and the other in the motor caravan. The batteries themselves are of different capacities and the charger seems to cope happily with that. They all show 100% in the camera when the charger says they are fully charged. I tend not to use the Olympus charger now as it takes up more space for no obvious advantage.

The charger for the EM10ii battery is made by NewMowa, a company of which I had not previously heard. Outwardly it looks the same as the ExPro charger and could be the same with a different badge.

Most of our holidays are in the motor caravan where we seldom have access to the mains. I have always used 12v chargers in the past but am now switching to USB. I usually only take one charger for each battery type. I'd probably survive a charger failure as I have two EM1ii each with its own battery plus one in the grip and one spare each. In theory that means about 1,200 shots per camera. For the EM10ii I have two spare batteries so, again disaster is unlikely.

Our van has 1x12v and 1xUSB in the cab and the same in the habitation area. The 12v is needed by the GPS (cab) and laptop (habitation) which leaves the USB for batteries and phones.

In the past when on safari I've taken an Olympus mains charger to use overnight and a 12v ExPro charger for use in the car. For our forthcoming trip in February I'll probably take the two ExPro USB chargers. Past experience is that unless a battery runs out late in the day it will usually charge in the car before we get back to camp. If not it will go in the USB mains plug. These days most cars have two 12v or USB outlets so you can charge at the same time as using GPS. Most Kruger accommodation has only one socket which tends to get used for the laptop so in car charging is ideal.

Re: EXPRO LCD Battery Charger died (replacement wanted)

I have two cameras that are the same model, good to have a back up especially when away
Do have a USB charger and mains charger, but only usually take the USB one away with me.
If it fails could still charge a battery in the spare camera or whilst carrying it from a powerbank.
