Talking Any Rose You Can Shoot I can Shoot Better!

As the Witch of the West has thrown down the gauntlet, or whatever it is that witches do when they try to hex you,
I went shooting roses in spite of today's blustery weather. Now she will see that roses bloom more sweetly on this side of the border!

Let the War of the Roses begin!
1.
Above we have the vibrant RED ROSE of Eastern Australia. 1/250 @ f/2.5 @ ISO250 @ EV -0.7
XZ-2 vs. OMD-M5!
Below we have the anaemic WHITE ROSE of South Australia. 1/400 @ f/3.2 @ ISO100 @ EV 0
2.
XZ-2 in Super Macro mode can shoot as close as one centimetre.
3.
1/320 @ f/2.8 @ ISO100 @ EV -0.3

4.
1/250 @ f/2.2 @ ISO250 @ EV -0.3

5.
Above shot in Super Macro mode from about 3cm at 1/100 @ f/2.2 @ ISO100 @ EV -0.3

6.
1/80 @ f/6.3 @ ISO100 @ EV -0.7

OK Witch of the West, Bring it on - get on yer broomstick and show me what that OMD E-M5 + 35mm macro thingy of yiz can do!

Not a rose man myself (they savage my flesh when I try to prune our huge rose hedge) but these are exceptional images, perfect in every respect. As we are now in the depth of Autumn it is surprising that we still have roses flowering in the garden with buds still opening.

Some real beauties there, Mark, but so far I think it's a draw in the battle between the Witch of the West and the Sorcerer of the South!

PS I was going to name you the Wrinkled Wizzard but didn't wish to cause offence just to amuse Lyn.

Personally, I'm no rose man or any kind of gardener at all, David as the Witch of the West well knows, but I'm up for anything to shoot at and I'm not precious about what they call them! And thanks for the very kind words.

No John, we can't call it a draw as in a predominately male enclave Sorcerers get a 100 point gender handicap, in spite of the fact than in the battle to come he holds the high ground (morally, of course! )

Wrinkled Wizzard would have been fine, John ... I'm a great believer that if you give it out then you also gotta take it too!

Re: Any Rose You Can Shoot I can Shoot Better!

Glad to see you included at least one White Rose of York amongst all those Red Roses of Lancaster or you would have been in trouble this side of the world as well as across the Victoria/SA divide!

You have some beautiful blooms there, Mark. We have a couple of pink buds still on one of our roses but it is struggling - more with the heavy rain than the cold at the moment!

Regards,
Ann1e

Re: Any Rose You Can Shoot I can Shoot Better!

Hi Annie - Lancaster being to the west of York as SA is to VIC, identifying myself in this contest as the VIC-torious Lancastrian, the Plantagenet wars is somewhat problematic with regard to Red and White Roses.

Of course the Witch of the West is yet to appear on the battlefield, I daresay she is as we speak frantically concocting some malevolent potion from her storm withered rose petals for a spellbinding retort!

Thanks for the generous comments ...

The red rose bias was not intentionally partisan, just that pristine whites are presently almost non-existent. I was lucky to find one in a relatively sheltered spot low down on a very large bush. Rain blemished white roses tinged with brown, abound.

Re: Any Rose You Can Shoot I can Shoot Better!

"Do I see a white flag waving in the distance?", cackled the Witch of the West.

"Nay, old eater of crows, 'tis the flash of Lancastrian steel", saith the Wizened old Warlock!

8.

And what about Papa Meilland's daughters at night with a flash? Vibrant and seductive ! (got their good looks from Momma Meilland, no doubt ! )

OK you Wizened Old Wizard or Wrinkled Old Warlock, I think you've opened the Pandora's Box now.

I really like photos 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 & out of the 2nd posting #'s 1 & 2.

Nothing like some good healthy rivalry. You two can fight over your roses & I'll show you some nice Rhododendrons in Blackheath (as soon as I post them).

For goodness sake Ross, hurry up and post your Rhodies and change the subject away from roses!
I was so disappointed last week as I went up to the Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens to photograph their Rhodies which have always been beautiful and the gardeners had pulled them all out. They suffered too much during the drought evidently and our last hot summer finished them off. So sad.
Will look forward to seeing your photos, they are a spectacular plant.

I'm sure the Witch has also participated in a spirit of good healthy rivalry, Ross and hopefully not too crestfallen in capitulation.
She announced in a continuation of this thread that, "I will post a couple more before I lay down my arms and retire gracefully from the battlefield! To live to fight another day? "

Her touching plea to "change the subject away from roses", would surely indicate defeat ... but then the ancient Chinese Warlord, Tsun Tzu once wrote, "When in Strength simulate weakness; when in weakness simulate strength", so in those promised "couple more" images she mentions, I am bracing for a possibly devastating and treacherous defeat ! ! !

Am looking forward to your Rhododendrons, mate ...
