Bloke stealing doors

In the 15th century they didn't have photography. If you saw something happening, you had to grab a bit of wood and carve it quickly. I suppose it could then be used in court.

Pete

OK, it is 15th century, but its a misericord in Ripon Cathedral. Nice place - Ripon.

Isn't it amazing what they managed to achieve with the primitive tools etc. Workmanship like that is lost today.

Re: Bloke stealing doors

Nice shot Pete. There are a couple of rows of misericords in St Nicholas's Cathederal in Newcastle, they are very strange.

I don't really agree that these skills have gone, they are around - I have a friend who is a roofer by trade but discovered that he could carve wood and does some wonderful stuff. And there's that company in Yorkshire who's signature is a mouse - can't remember the name. The trouble is it's expensive, and probably was then.

One of the Newcastle ones - remarkably similar in style & wood, even though the subject matter is very different:

When a guide showed me the misericords in Winchester Cathedral, they told me some had been recently stolen.

Not really. This was the first attempt by my wife at wood carving a few years ago. No-one had told her how difficult it would be - so she just got on with it!

The others at the top of the page are also by her.

One her more recent carvings:
