useful resource on expaling how it all works

I was just explaining to some of our engineers why you can't just buy a cheap webcam and expect it to give high quality 30fps video when mounted inside a machine where the light is really bad.

I found this to be one of the best clearest simple explanations of how an awful lot of this stuff works I've seen in quite a while

Re: useful resource on expaling how it all works

I've worked in surveillance CCTV design and image analysis in my past.

Once upon a time folks used cheap analogue cameras in the dark and recorded the results repeatedly on very worn out VHS tape. End result - you can't see what was recorded when you do get an incident to look at.

These days they use cheap digital cameras and record onto DVD. But look! If you set the compression to 500:1 you can get a whole month off 16 cameras 24h a day onto one disk. Guess what. End result - you can't see what was recorded when you do get an incident to look at.
