Exclamation A production spec E-30 has arrived!

Yesterday afternoon I picked up a production spec. E-30 and 14-54 II from Olympus UK.

I'm allowed to talk about image quality and to upload samples

These will be released later this evening - 28 images in all taken in the winter sunlight here in Hemel late this morning today. These will be published in an article on FTU.

Tomorrow on FTU, I'll be comparing high ISO samples from an E-3, E-30 and... a Nikon D300.

I haven't had a thorough look at the high ISO comparison shots just yet, but my initial glee at the improvement in high ISO quality over the E-3 is thankfully confirmed. There is no banding any more and the grain that is there is quite manageable. Chroma noise is kept well under control as well.

More coming soon!

Ian

I don't expect it to match the D700 in this respect, but it might give the D300 a bit of a jolt!

It would have been beans on toast for my familly if I'd had an E-30 to play with!

This would be good news indeed - and, together with the other parts of the E30 spec, must indicate that an upgraded version or successor to the E-3 itself can't be far off..... Any straws in the wind on that?

No, I have heard nothing from Olympus at all concerning a replacement for the E-3.

The E-30 samples are now up at:

Do let me know what you think!

Well, D700 noise is significantly superior than the D300 at ISO 800 and above, and of course there is a significant dynamic range headroom.

But I think the E-30 brings Four Thirds appreciably closer to the D300 and the D300 has been widely praised for its sensor performance.

What is this fetish for high ISO stuff? Is it the only real selling point these days?

Is it going the way of high pixel count? getting the right balance between the two is the way forward or is that what they are always trying for.

Depends on what you shoot.

I had a need for good low-light (No flash) performance so had to switch to the D700 as i was not happy with the results (and it was commented upon by the person i was doing the work for).

I still love the E-system though and am working hard to afford to get an E-3 again, but for the time being the D700 is earnings its keep

High ISO performance has, with some justification, been an Achilles heel of the Four Thirds system, so it's naturally of interest if this issue is getting closer to being resolved.
