Did I make the right choice?

Don't know if there's a better board for this, so will post here. Please move if there's a better location.

For some time I've been pondering whether to get a 12-40mm f2.8 zoom, or purchasing 12mm f2 and 25mm f1.8 primes to add to my 17mm f1.8 and 45mm f1.8, and finally decided upon the 12-40mm zoom.

I've been monitoring the costs associated with each option, and came to the conclusion that buying an EM5 Mk 2/12-40 kit combined with an offer + cashback promotion [1], etc. might be better value than just buying the zoom.

As there's been a site-wide 15% off code at the Olympus Store since March (JASPER15), I've also been checking there for another promotion that includes a 12-40 2.8 to combine both and get a decent overall discount.

On Saturday I noticed that the Oly Store had the Black OM5 Mk2 + 12-40mm f2.8 PRO + HLD-8 grip + a 2nd BLN-1 battery for 1,149.00, whilst their Silver version was 1,499, some 350 more expensive! (they put the black price up within 30 mins of starting to process my order!)

As I wanted both a cheap, non-grey import 12-40mm, with a full EU warranty, plus an upgrade from my EM5 Mk1[2] , this seemed liked the way to go, so I used the above code (JASPER15).

So I got my brand new 12-40mm lens plus the latest EM5 backup body plus the power grip and a second battery all for 977 which is probably the cheapest it's ever been available for, and about the same as buying everything second hand with little or no warranties.

Another way of looking at it, is that I got the EM5 Mk2 body, power grip and extra battery for an extra over cost of 153 above just buying a new lens. A new non grey import lens bought from a UK supplier currently costs 824 (899 less 75 Olympus Summer/June Cashback)

Received yesterday morning, set up using all the tips in the OMD EM5 Mk2 thread in this forum and taken out on first trip today. Only problem wasn't with the new body, but the old one, after reading about loose Mk1 eye cups I checked mine and found I'd lost it on my last trip! I've had it since March 2103 without any problem, read about loose eye cups and it goes missing!

[1] Although Oly cashback T&Cs usually/always exclude 'any other promotion', using the promotion to get a pricematch from another store (such as John Lewis) will obscure that.

[2] The EM5 Mk2 has most of the 'bells and whistles' my EM5 Mk1 is missing compared to my EM1 Mk 2

Re: Did I make the right choice?

If it helps I have the 12 ~ 40mm f2.8 zoom and it is a stunning lens. I rarely use anything else on my OM-D E-M1.

Have a look at Carmarthen Camera Centre for some good prices on non-grey imports.

Sounds like you made a well timed buy! That's the set up I'm aiming at. Got the 12-40 already just needs to switch from a 10ii to a 5ii

Re: Did I make the right choice?

That's a good deal for a pukka UK E-M5ii + 12-40.

As regards the 12-40 vs the 12/2 + 25/1.8, I'd say you made the right choice. The 12-40 is sharper at 12mm than the 12mm prime and whilst the 25/1.8 is a great lens, it's not the best choice in the standard FL range if shallow DOF is what you want (the Sigma 30/1.4 or the Panasonic 25/1.4 would be better choices). All IMHO of course .

Re: Did I make the right choice?

I always try to aquire my new photography gear (and everything else) at the best possible price, as our sole income is my early retirement pension, and our daughter, having left uni last year has been doing voluntary work, is now about to embark on a year's unpaid internship, has been accepted to go back for another year after that for a masters. Should she then decide on a PhD, there goes the benefit from my state pension when I eventually receive it.

Ebay prices for a used 12-40 appeared to be around 400, but a brand new grey import from HDEW is only 449. I see bidding on lots of used items I'm interested going up to (and above!) the same as what new could be bought for when on offer/after cashback/both. How many 449 lenses will be sold on ebay in a year or two for around the same price (or more!)?

I found a used EM5 Mk2 being sold by a UK dealer that was described as worn, chipped, scratched, heavily used, etc., for almost 400, so again found that buying new can be cheaper than buying used if you watch and wait. Next planned aquisition is a 2x teleconverter with a 'Black Friday/Cyber Monday' discount.

If you didn't already have the 12-40, this might be the best deal around at the moment, camera + lens+ extra 2 years extended warranty for 999? Something I looked at before buying from the Oly store for 22 less but with a grip and 2nd battery. I find that grip really useful when I've got a 40-150 f2.8 or 300 f4 on the EM5 Mk 2, but without it I can still slip it in a jacket pocket, unlike the EM1 Mk2.

Re: Did I make the right choice?

An excellent deal for a little bit of homework. Both items are great kit to have. I wouldn't pass up an EM5.2 for that little bit extra either.

Re: Did I make the right choice?

Almost same dilemma here. I am leaving for Bromo end of this month. I do not have a spare body. I was offered a new EM1.2 for GBP1,079.00 with 1 additional battery. Should I jump at it?

If it's not a grey import, it's a bargain: https://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/...II-Camera-Body

It's cheaper than DigitalRev even if it is a grey, and s/h prices from people like MPB and Wex are in the mid-800s.

Best price for new body I've seen was 1,174 after cashback at SRS & Cameraworld last Black Friday.

But if the code JASPER15 is still working at the Oly Store, https://shop.olympus.eu/en_GB/cameras/om-d/e-m1-mark-ii it would be 1,189.15 for either black or limited edition silver.

EDIT: Just checked and that code still works and takes 15% (209.85) off, making it 39.85 less than anything listed on Camerapricebuster.

P.S. if you're interested in getting an OMD EM1 mk2 + a 12-100 PRO lens, there's an unexpected 150 saving that appears at the checkout https://shop.olympus.eu/en_GB/camera...-100mm-pro-kit reducing the 2,199 price to 2,049. Using JASPER15 then takes another 307.35 off, getting the price down to 1,741.65, an extra over cost of only 552.50 for the 12-100 PRO (859 at HDEW) which seems to be a bit of a bargain. The best price on Camerapricebuster for this kit is 1,979, 237.35 more than buying from the Oly Store.

'Only' 765 more than my EM5 mk2 + 12-40, but something I would only have seriously considered if both camera body size and lens size were not my main requirements.

Re: Did I make the right choice?

That’s an amazing price for new. I bought my E-M1 mk ii second hand, for 1 short of 1000 (albeit with just 9000 shots taken, an extra genuine battery and a release cable thrown in). Problems? Well, now I have it I can’t imagine being without it. So if it breaks, outside of the LCE 6 month guarantee, matters get expensive.
