Re: Spotted, Little One, Just Blowing

You seem to have attracted the attention of one of the group in #1.

I like #2. best and imo would benefit by cropping all before, "mple-Fry"

All nicely exposed and very sharp, Nick.

I like the eye contact established in No1, normally these guys are too occupied to acknowledge a photographer. It's nice that you featured their banner prominently to indentify who they are.

Number two for me also...brass bands seem to suit the mono treatment and it helps with the glare on the instruments.

They are notoriously difficult!

No 2 for me as well, and Mark's suggestion for a crop seems a nice idea.

Re: Spotted, Little One, Just Blowing

Nice set Nick, the B&W is the nicest for me. I'm not sure about the crop. It'd still be a good shot, but it's fine as it is (IMHO). If you crop you get either a disembodied hand sticking out of the trombone, or it's a bit too tight if you go further.

Re: Spotted, Little One, Just Blowing

Well here's the suggested crop

And I'm mixed about the result. It does make it a better portrait of the player, but it loses the disparity of sizes between the player/instrument and those surrounding, which is what I saw/wanted. Perhaps that means I need to go back to the original and see if another edit will strenghen (make obvious?) my intent.

Thanks all for the comments.

Actually shot to get the banners, interesting how much a stare dominates the photograph.

Re: Spotted, Little One, Just Blowing

Could swear I responded to this yesterday, Nick - probably unsaved! ... my comment was about #2, cropped a bit from the left might make a good shot even better.

I think we are seeing different things in the composition, no harm in that.

Re: Spotted, Little One, Just Blowing

Nick, personally I'd have gone for a really tight crop on this one...I think it still shows the different sizes of the instrument well...I do tend to crop in very tight on a lot of my shots, which has been criticized in the past, but it's what I like...

Hope you don't mind?

Having spent the past year photographing my pet brass band, I do know that these are the sort of photos that the band members like...

They really are such difficult subjects whilst they're playing...there's always an odd head/hand/instrument in the way...I seem to spend hours cloning out bits and pieces!

Yes, that's a nice tight crop, although I still like the first version.

Re: Spotted, Little One, Just Blowing

The tight crop works in turning the 'subject' closer to a portrait, though if that's what I intended it would have been what I shot.

The original shot maintains the focus on the player, but far more effectively shows the disparity in stature of the focus player compared with the surrounding tuba players.

There isn't a 'right' choice between the two options, though mayhaps the 'wrong' choice was mine as my intent is not seen clearly enough.

The bandstand where I shot this is a challengeing location, both for exposure (it is roofed and the 'glade' is surrounded by trees - so the contrast between shadow/glare is quite extreme) and for compostion. Still it's all good fun.

Thanks all

Nick

Re: Spotted, Little One, Just Blowing

Sorry if you didn't like the tight crop Nick. I wasn't criticising your original photo at all...I was simply trying to show what the band like, from my experience. It's great to see someone else photographing brass bands! They are such a great subject, but so, so bloody difficult! I always print or email my photos to the members, so I'm purely going on what they like and what they respond to.

They're like wild animals...always in the wrong place and the lighting is challenging! It's incredibly difficult to get decent shots unless you are very, very fortunate...you can't get them to pose whilst they're performing, so you have to do what you can...

From my experience, the band would probably love it if you were to contact them with your photos...I did, and was invited along to their rehearsals and now they are all firm friends and I'm invited along to every event....
