Not what I meant. It won’t fit a 500GB Drive with only 200GB used (and defragged) onto a 250GB drive. A product I used for years, PQDI, did it just fine. Don’t see why ‘modern’ software can’t.

Re: External SSD drive

I think if you boot into the BIOS you might be able to change the boot drive. There is a key combination which you need to hold down while powering the laptop on it varies by make.

Or you could try this approach.

See this video.

I bought my SSD from here highly recommended.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-co...sd-solid-state

I got the 500GB Samsung 860 it was on a promo when I bought it but it has gone up a bit now.

I also got an external case so that I could transfer the software across and then
after doing the swap

install the old hard drive in the case and use it for taking backups.

Thanks Dave, sounds very straight forward....

What possibly could go wrong...:-))

Everything! Don’t clone the blank one onto the old one!

I thought it was a desktop?

If so, simply connect the new drive in place of the old one. It should boot from there, but you might need to go into the BIOS to make sure that the new drive is recognised properly.

You can also set boot priority from within the BIOS.

There is a free utility that you should download to keep the firmware up to date and perform regular maintenance. You can also choose to 'Over Provision' the drive so that a percentage is kept to one side for 'dead cells' thus extending drive life. The downside is that you loose a few percent of the available space.

The speed boosting software will be found in the utility.

Re: External SSD drive

It's called 'Samsung Magician' and it's very useful. I use the 'Performance Optimization' every week on all drives (because I have 'C' as the operating system and programs and 'Z' as data saving) just to keep things running smoothly.

Find it here -
https://www.samsung.com/semiconducto...umer/magician/

Glad you got sorted

That's the one. Thank you Keith.

By the way, if you have two internal SSD's it is worth moving your PageFile.sys file to the second SSD. That significantly improves speed and also extends the life of C:\ drive.

Re: External SSD drive

Thanks Nigel. You mentioned that when I was seeking help here trying to understand the problems of moving to a SSD, your advice was very helpful.

That's one of the reasons I have tried to help Mark in this thread. I'm happy he's chosen the SSD I recommended, I hope it will serve him as well as mine is serving me, and that it all worked out well for him.

Re: External SSD drive

I am pleased to hear that yours is working well Keith.

There is a lot of talk about SSD's having a limited read/write life but I have had no problems. Some of mine have been in constant use for three or four years now and they still report 100% life remaining.
