E-M1X preview sessions
Let's have a new thread so that anyone who goes to one of the hands-on preview sessions for the E-M1X can report back and give opinions on what it is really like.
No reason to stop the speculations on the other thread though! John |

Re: E-M1X preview sessions
Went to SRS this afternoon to see the new camera. I think David Smith had been kept busy earlier, but I went later on when it was quieter and had some time to play with the camera including trying it outdoors with my 300/4 + 1.4x. I couldn't use my card and bring back any images.
It is very responsive and you can make adjustments while the last burst is still writing to the card. The viewfinder is much bigger and I didn't notice any problems with the resolution. As it was late on a dull day in a high street I couldn't really judge the BIF performance, but the focus seemed to grab a couple of gulls OK. The camera is heavier than what I am used to, but it handles very well, especially with the longer lenses. They had a special price today of £2549 for pre-orders which is £250 off. I'd guess that this price may be available at other demo days and possibly at the NEC. You can also get a £200 bonus if you trade anything in. So with trading in a few bits like the Samyang fisheye and some old Sony NEX stuff, the balance I'll pay is about the same price I paid for my EM1 Mk2. Deliveries are expected in late February. I took a few photos with my phone. I tried it with my 15mm f8 and you can travel light if you want ![]() ![]() They also had the shell of the camera there. It feels feather light, yet very strong. It weighs just 210g, about 1/5 of the total camera. David did add a green light for effect for some of the photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to David and SRS for an interesting session. |

Re: E-M1X preview sessions
The thing with this camera is it looks huge, but whenever I see it in someone’s hand it doesn’t look bad. I’m guessing quite a bit smaller than the original E-1?

Re: E-M1X preview sessions
It is big, but the grip feels good with space for all your fingers. But it's bigger than the E-1. About 3mm wider and 34mm higher. With both batteries loaded it weighs about 50% more. With longer lenses it feels well balanced.

Re: E-M1X preview sessions
Looking forward to some realtime reports on this beast.Off to the NEC in March so hope there are some good deals. I have read good and not so good reports of the camera, so await unbiased reports from here.

Re: E-M1X preview sessions
I had a surprise opportunity for a fondle this aftie - Oly man Chris Booth turned up with one at LCE in Salisbury for a couple of hours so I dashed down to see it.
I'm very glad I did. It pretty much confirmed what the previews were saying - it struck me as h-u-g-e and h-e-a-v-y. I have stubby little fingers and for me, the grip was so big that I couldn't hold it comfortably. There are plenty of nice things about it (the joystick for focus point selection is really nice) and I'm sure it delivers great images (subject to driver competence, of course) but it took about 3 seconds to realise that it's not for me. I asked about AF behaviour with 4/3 lenses and Chris didn't know but promised to ask. He also didn't have much he could say about new lenses, except that there is probably going to be an announcement in Feb, and what we already know about the 150-400. He didn't have much detail on the new flash system, but there are some details on the Oly page now which might answer a few questions: https://www.olympus.co.uk/site/en/c/...tems/index.jsp Good luck to anyone else (with normal-sized hands) who gets to stroke one. Re: E-M1X preview sessions
Thanks for the detailed shell photos Andy. I'm guessing the GPS receiver lives under the 'pop up flash' cover. Did you tap that? I guess it might be plastic?

Re: E-M1X preview sessions
It would make sense for the GPS to be at the top, but I didn’t check that part. I’m looking forward to getting GPS back after missing it for 6 years since I moved from Sony DSLR.

Re: E-M1X preview sessions
Just back from my little visit to the EM1X and must say it was not what I expected at all. Am a EM1 Mk 2 user with small hands so was expecting the new camera to be too large and too heavy. What a pleasant surprise- it fits me and could not complain about the weight which to me was not significantly more than my standard EM1 Mk 2 with 12-100 fitted. The EM1X had the 12-100 fitted too. Much like my introduction to Olympus two years ago at the Photography Show, I was hooked as soon as I picked it up. Must admit to putting a deposit down (only £5) for pick up at the end of the month. This will include a 1to 1 set up session at the shop and I will part-ex my EM1 Mk 2. So much for willpower.
