Re: lightroom sharpening

An interesting article, thanks Ian.

I'm not so sure about his first suggestion, that you always crank the initial overall sharpening up to 50 as a first step. My understanding is that one reason raw files were soft was that cameras had anti-aliasing (posh word for blur) filters in front of the sensors to reduce moiré effects. In-camera JPEG processing would sharpen the files, but any third-party raw processor would get the unsharpened data and the resulting softness was visible. So Lightroom added some default sharpening on import (it doesn't actually sharpen the file of course, it just records a sharpening operation before anything else). I think that even if this is needed, it is not a good idea at the beginning. You should only add overall sharpening to a final image before saving it, as the degree you need depends on the size and medium it is destined for.

Most decent cameras these days have reduced the strength of the AA filter or got rid of it altogether - I think Olympus was among the first to be brave enough to do this. I have the camera-specific import defaults set not to add any sharpening.

John

Re: lightroom sharpening

Having said that, the other advice about using and controlling the options looks pretty good.
