NE England trip to Chillingham ?

Would there be any interest in a visit to Chillingham Castle in Northumberland for some indoor / architectural/ghoulish stuff?

I've only visited the gardens, but I got into a bit of the castle and it looks great. Not at all English Heritage or National Trust, very rough and ready and VERY interesting. Those of a sensitive nature should avoid the dungeons, the original torture kit is still there

The castle is shut during the winter, but they "welcome Groups by special appointment." If there's enough interest I can see what the score is. It's 9 per person during the summer, price off season is by arrangement.

Yes I'd be up for this. Do I need to 'watch' this post or will you PM? I'm new to the forum so not sure of procedure.

Re: NE England trip to Chillingham ?

With the usual provisos of the day & date being good for me, I'd be happy to add my name to this as its a fabulous castle and gardens, and if any Tyne valley folk wanted a lift they could PM me once dates are firmed up.

Regards
Chris

Re: NE England trip to Chillingham ?

Ok chaps, it looks like a goer.

I'll get in touch with the powers that be and see how many they'd want before they'd call it a "group" and what the costs would be. If we don't quite get enough can I invite non e-groupers? A couple of my local Flickr contacts may be interested. (Controversial )

byegad - if you haven't done so already, just subscribe to get email responses when there's an update to the thread. The option is in the dropdown "Thread Tools", which is on the right just above the 1st post in the thread.

Re: NE England trip to Chillingham ?

I've had a response from the castle now. I've left a message on their answerphone for them to call me back so I can make sure they know what we're up to and so I can be sure we can use flash, tripods etc etc.

They have quoted either 7 an adult + 30 for a guide, or 9 per adult with no guide. They didn't mention numbers, so I assume any sensible number would be OK.

First off, can I get an idea of numbers. I guess some may want to bring family members along if there's room.

Then there's a date. I assume a weekend is necessary, so if those wanting to go can post up preferences + definite 'can't do' dates. Lets' assume we're doing the trip this year, so dates in Nov/Dec please.

A post along the lines of:
"I can do Sat or Sun but can't do 16th-17th Nov or 7th Dec"
is what I'm looking for

And should we hire a guide? Sounds like a good idea to me.

Re: NE England trip to Chillingham ?

A sympathetic guide willing to allow us to snap away sounds good to me, but I could manage without. Saturdays are free for me except the 23rd November. Sundays I can't do either November the 17th or 24th. I will be travelling from just South of Durham City and can offer a lift to anyone willing to contribute towards petrol costs.

Re: NE England trip to Chillingham ?

I'm free 16-17 Nov, possibly 23-24 Nov won't know for a week.

and free 14-15 and 21-22 Dec

Don't mind with or without guide, as byegad says, the guide will need to be patient though.

Re: NE England trip to Chillingham ?

A guide is good for the background info about the history of the castle and its rescue/restoration (as well as sometimes giving access to some more hidden corners) but the guide in the normal mode may limit the time or opportunity for photo taking. So if there is a guide, could they do a very slow tour to maximise photo opportunities or perhaps a guided tour and then time for the photographers to wander around again at their own pace?

Most weekends Nov/early Dec are flexible for me so I'm happy to try to fit in around others

I might bring myself and possibly two other photographers of a non-Oly bent!! if that's possible and depending on their availability. I'll be able to confirm my numbers nearer the time.

I'm looking forward to this as hopefully the parcel might have arrived by then so could be a good test of the Instruction manual!
For those who haven't been I've always described it as a cross between National Trust and English Heritage in that it's a lived in castle, individually furnished and quite homely but you are (or were last time I went) allowed to wonder fairly freely without onerous restrictions and the story of its restoration is very much the opposite of the National Trust approach. Well worth a visit.

Thanks for organising this too!

Regards
Chris

Re: NE England trip to Chillingham ?

I shall ensure that the powers that be are aware that we want to wander around, stop some places for a longer look, use flash & tripods, climb up ladders, swing from chandeliers, get strapped into the Rack etc etc.

So far everyone can make either day on the weekends of 14/15 and 21/22 December
