Highway to the Snow

If you've missed me the past few days, then it could only have been with a deep sigh of relief.
Last Tuesday on impulse I decided I needed a getaway so I hastily threw some bedding, a toothbrush,
a razor, cameras and a change of underwear in the Mazda and headed north while I decided where to go. It has been
5 years since I crossed the Great Dividing Range to Bega on the coast, so I rang VicRoads to check that the road was open.
This thread is the first of a few that I will be posting during the course of the next few days - the best is yet to come!

The driver of this vehicle apparently decided TO go off-roading without a 4W Drive.

Further along, I took a turnoff to the right that led to Landers Falls but a few kms on, that track was closed to all but 4WDs.

So I figured the next best thing to do was to boil the billy and make myself a nice hot cuppa coffee before looking for a place to spend the night.

In spite of intermittent sunshine the temperature was around 2C. These happy campers had built themselves an igloo.

A hundred or so kms further on I found a suitable spot to pass the night, less than midway to the coast.

Now the mighty old Mazda has a rear seat backrest that can be laid flat to expose a gaping hole into the boot through which I made a cosy bed!

Gute Nacht, Gute Nacht, Gute Nacht!

(Phone camera selfie 12s delay) ON REACHING HOME THE ODOMETER HAD RACKED UP JUST OVER 2100 kms - approx. 1305 mi. IN 4 DAYS. (ever ready access to OMD's )

Re: Highway to the Snow

That top landscape looks like the perfect combination of snow and a clear road. A great way to travel.

Thanks for your comments. Three days later I'm still up there in the mountains - and Mark, I guess you're right, "fun for several minutes, anyway". Sending snow pics to you guys is like exporting coal to Newcastle.

Re: Highway to the Snow

It looks like you had a 'cool' time Mark. We've had some 'white' stuff over the top end of the Blue Mountains & west too (but I didn't venture up there then though). It's possible that blue car didn't know how to skate on some black ice.

Re: Highway to the Snow

I daresay the drivers of both the blue and the white cars weren't the only victims of black ice. Fortunately the highway
had been cleared and was dry by the time I reached it, otherwise I might have had quite a different set of pictures to share!.
