Wild About Britain site?

The Wild About Britain ('WAB') site has been neglected by its owner for the last few months and has as a consequence suffered with problems. In the last few days it appears to have been 'hacked' and I now get a message that my account is suspended.

As the site owner recently admitted that he is very busy with other matters, it's possible that 'WAB' is now finished for good.

I know that others on this forum are or have been members of WAB and have an interest in Britain's natural history. Does anyone know of an alternative to WAB?

Jim

Re: Wild About Britain site?

Jim, It's not your account that's been suspended. It's theirs unfortunately, which is a shame as it was a good resource and on-line community.
I understand that it's also a registered charity.

Re: Wild About Britain site?

Thanks both for shedding light on the situation. I've been googling for a couple of says to try and find out what was happening - and this thread was the only reference i could find! I used WAB quite a bit and I had wondered what was going on. I can't believe it's just gone - and we'll never know the other users ever again!

I would also be interested if anyone know's an alternative - it was really helpful to post photographs and ask questions, share knowledge etc.

Cheers

Mark

Re: Wild About Britain site?

If there are any WAB-bers on here using Facebook, WAB Castaways is still running. The group was set up with the sole intention of discussing problems getting on to the WAB site. You'll see a few familiar names in that group.

The group will become "closed" in a few days, which means you will be able to search for it (at the moment it is "secret" and therefore hidden).

If you tell me your WAB username them I will approve you. We do not have any smart ideas as to why WAB has closed down, even though we have a WAB Mod amongst our members.

However, if you should ever wonder what happened to some of the regulars, feel free to pop in and say hello. Or just to have a good old moan (Jim!!).

Deb

PS I am out of my depth in this forum, so I will not be checking this site very regularly. Just search for "WAB Castaways" on Facebook to get in touch. Best wishes to all former WAB-bers.

Thanks Deb, same user name as on here.

There's also the Natural History Museum forum Natureplus

Looks to be quite good for identification.

Hi Deb,

My username was 'Perones' on WAB. I certainly recognise your name I'll search for the castaways group as you suggest when it becomes searchable. It's such a shame WAB's seemingly gone

ps Out of depth? it took me about three attempts just to get the authentication question correct...as if digital camera's don't need film...

Re: Wild About Britain site?

I don't go there very often any more and was puzzled why I couldn't find it the other day. Sad to see it has gone and maybe permanently. It was one of thise rare forums where, like this one, everyone was helpful and friendly. Coming to think of it, it is thanks to them I have my 510 and hence why I can come here. Small world....

Will

Re: Wild About Britain site?

Folks, Having just been approved for the Facebook site by Deb, I came across a rather useful post;
If you access https://archive.org/ and add Wild About Britain's web address i.e. http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk you ab go back to the end of 2014 and see an archive of the site. OK, you can't post anything new as it's an archive, but the old articles seem to be there.

See also http://www.natureuk.org as another possible alternative.
Just make sure you turn the sound off before registering as they have a really annoying spam avoider at the bottom of the page

Re: Wild About Britain site?

Another sad and lost WaB member here- I was jaelen on the forums.

I came across this website while searching for answers to Wild about Britain's disappearance. I was missing it so much that in the end my partner got tired of listening to me grouse about it, and made a (hopefully temporary!) replacement.
It's called Wild about the British Isles, and only went live yesterday...but please have a look- maybe it can help us old WaBBers keep going until the real thing reappears.
I can't post links yet, but if you type wabi.freeforums DOT net into your url box it will come up, (it's only just been submitted to Google and Bing search engines, so might not appear yet in an ordinary search.)

I'm hoping someone can take over WaB and bring it back- soon!

What's the url? I have tried a number of variations, with no success.
