New 12-200

Went on an organised `street` photowalk in Bristol yesterday hosted at Wex and booked via Olympus Imagespace. Two hours for 10, good value. Lenses were there to borrow and I was surprised to get my hands on the new 12-200. So, these are all taken with that lens mounted on my EM1 Mk 2 used at varying distances. The lens has good range, is pretty sharp, light and nice to use. Focus is quick. No lens stabilisation and I understand not sealed quite to the standard of the PRO lenses. Would make a great `catch all` lens for the Pen F or EM5/10 in my opinion. Price is high at 799. I have a 12-100 for my Mk2 and a 14-150 which I use on my Pen F so am not in the market for the new lens but if you do not have those lenses this might make a good buy, particularly when discounts arrive or some get on to the used market.

Re: New 12-200

Nice street shots. But, I must say this is the third set of images I've seen from the 12-200 and in all of them I've thought the images looked dull/muddy. Maybe I'm being too critical? A good lens should lift the veil and I don't see it with this lens. The mystical "micro-contrast" is missing I think.

Re: New 12-200

Paul,

I certainly think the 12-100 is sharper as perhaps it should be given its cost and construction. In fairness to the 12-200, conditions were dull and I was experimenting with white balance, something I should have mentioned in my original comment.

Re: New 12-200

How is the size and weight compared to the 12-100?

Agreed! The 14-150mm is a bit of a compromise and I expect that the 12-200mm would be even more so. The 12-100mm is nowhere near as much of a compromise as I was expecting but, since it is labelled "PRO" and costs a small fortune, I should have expected that.

But 12-200mm? That proposed price? That weight? That spells "COMPROMISE". I would love to be proved wrong, but I suspect I won't.

I know it's an unfair comparison, but you can pick up the 12-100 from a number of grey importers for around 850. The 12-200 is 800 at present. If you were buying today you'd get the 12-100 for 50 more. I know that the 12-200 will fall in price, and probably be 500 via grey import within the year, but right now you'd be crazy to pay 800 for the 12-200.

It appears smaller and lighter than the 12-100 PRO.

Mrs Walti has the 14-150 mki on the EM-1i which is great for her as she doesn't want to change lenses and is more than happy with the output, I can see this as an upgrade for her in the future once the price has fallen a bit.

For those of you that think the EM1i is therefore wasted, it means she's always carrying my reserve camera body around with her!

The 12-200 is going for the equivalent of about 685 in Australia at present, while the 12-100 is going for about 773. These aren't even grey market lenses, but official imports. Even at those prices, I think that they are going to struggle to sell the 12-200.
