Olympus 12-40 MF only

Got my new secondhand 12-40 from reputable dealer last week and took a few frames with it. Worked properly.
Now away for four days and took it for a walk up Ingleborough this morning ( it was very cold and windy with some snow on the ground and I am still cold ) Problem is that the lens will not auto focus. With the camera set to full time af the other lenses autofocus correctly but with the 12-40 the screen says MF and indeed the camera works in MF mode with peaking and magnifying when the focus ring is rorated. In the menu the AF Mode wording is greyed out.
I will obviously go back to the dealer when I get home and have the sale documentation.
I have wiped the contacts of the lens and camera gently with a clean handkerchief and checked the camera menu to see if there is something Ihave missed doing but without success.
Can anyone give advice about the possible cause of the problem and how to put it right please ? Seems to me a lack of communication possibly caused by a faulty connection or dirty contact but that is only a wild guess. Help please.
Jeff
PROBLEM SOLVED. On another forum there was reference to pulling back the focus ring disengaging autofocus on the 40-150 pro which I found is a function on this lens also. Who would have guessed - not me. Anyhow a great sigh of relief.

Re: Olympus 12-40 MF only

Don't panic!

You have probably got the focus clutch on the lens in the manual position, slide it back to electronic focus and you should be OK.

These clutches catch everyone out to start with.

Regards.

Thanks for good advice.
I had just found out indirectly a few minutes ago what the problem was by "googling" for an answer.
Certainly had me fooled.

I'd have to pay you as well - I came back from the shop on Saturday and was convinced I had "bricked" my new camera and 12-100 (it happens on that lens too) in 30 minutes...

I'm wondering whether some of the sellers are having a bit of fun with us all

1st step on the learning curve ... taken

regards
Andy

I did it with my 12 ~ 40 too.

How do you find the 12 ~ 100 Andy? I would really like the 40 ~ 150, but I don't know when I would use it. The 12 ~ 100 would be much more useful to me for my purposes.

Re: Olympus 12-40 MF only

12-100 is a stunning lens. It's definitely the best zoom lens I've ever used. On the big side for u43, but smaller than the Panasonic 12-35/35-100 f2.8 combo I had before.

Thank you Paul, that is handy to know.

I have 'the other' Olympus 40 ~ 150 which is light enough to take anywhere, and is good enough for most of the time, but I find the optical quality nosedives beyond about 120 mm focal length at any aperture.

I might see if I can hire the 12 ~ 100 from Ian to give it a try.

My first impression is I keep needing to check my camera bag is not open and the camera is still there because the weight difference between the E-30 and 2 lenses to the EM1 and one lens is significant

Regards
Andy

Re: Olympus 12-40 MF only

Yes, I agree about the 12-100. I've rapidly become a convert, however I keep forgetting I've got all that tele zoom range to go!

This and the 300 have completely changed and lightened the kit I was planning to take to Scotland on Saturday, and it means I can fit in the 300 for some birding at RSPB Balranald on North Uist.

I was originally going to take also the A7Rii and 16-35 for landscape, but I'm now only packing the E-M1ii, 7.5 fisheye, 12-100, 60 macro and 300+tc, plus the PL 15 f1.7 for street and any low-light work, and the Fuji X70 also for street and as a tiny, slip-in-the pocket, last-resort backup.

That lot fits in a shoulder bag with batteries, charger and travel essentials that matches the 6kg & 40x35x18cm hand baggage limit on the Twin Otter I'm taking from Glasgow to land on the beach in Barra.

I've decided to leave the 7-14 and its Nisi filter kit at home, so I'm just taking a set of 72mm screw-in filters plus a tripod & head in hold baggage.

15 - 840mm: try that with a DSLR

I found it really useful at the wedding I went to Saturday - especially as it was paired with the EM1 mk II so I was able to be shooting at ISO 6400 without any really worry on quality

Here's the church at 12mm

The decoration at 47mm

and finally able to reach across to the chief bridesmaid (Neice#2) at 100mm

In comparison the Pro photographer was swapping between 2 cameras all the time - he was good and very efficient at it, but "Its a keeper!"

Regards
Andy

Re: Olympus 12-40 MF only

Also have the 12-100 bought as a panic buy as I thought the 12 40 had died - turned out the camera needed resetting.
However I will not be getting rid of the 12-40 as there locations and occasions when the more discrete lens is useful and it also can be kept on the Mki while the Mkii has the longer lens on it.
