Question Have you considered...

..that if Olympus does get it right with the promised Four Thirds lens users' solution camera - that second hand FT lens prices might be on the rise? Think about it...

Instead of getting the CAF working with BIF pictures it will be getting it right with "Pigs in Flight" pictures <g>

Haha, nice one Derek , but I'm inclined to believe that we will be presented with a solution very soon, i.e. weeks rather than months. Exactly what form it will take and how good it will be remains to be seen, but I am optimistic. Olympus have always said they were working on a solution and said it would take time to get right; I'm convinced that that time is now, so let's at least keep an open and positive mind until the announcement.

So if I buy cheap 4/3 lenses now and stockpile them to make a profit in a month or two, will I be guilty of Insider Trading?

Re: Have you considered...

Mmmm maybe maybe not.

Logic says no as FT is now a niche market that is not growing and most now have the FT lenses they want.

Those waiting to see if the new hybrid MFT body is what they hoped it would be before deciding what to do with their lenses will if it is up to expectations hold on to them and they will not appear on the second hand market but there will be no extra demand for them as any newcomers are going to go for the E-M5 rather than pay what will be a half a grand extra just so they can use legacy second hand FT lenses.

If it is all hype and it does not live up to expectations then there will be a even bigger glut of second hand ft lenses on the market with a marked drop in price.

But as my dear Mom used to say theres nowt as queer as folk, so what do I know and I could be way off the mark..

I feel your Mom and my Pa went to the same school of life ...

I am surprised that the Olympus have not made available MORE m4/3 lenses. Therefore I am feeling that "that Markets value" does not warrant the massive investment in more glass ... so maybe Olympus are going to try and "hang on in there" to their existing market (us loyal hanging on ones and upgrade as many m4/3 EM-5's to the new All singing (4/3rds and m4/3rds) body and re launch the 4/3rds lenses ... while Olympus sit on the fence a bit (due to financial restrictions) to see if they really do have a market at the e top end

Re: Have you considered...

I saw a used 14-35.for sale in Ontario a few months ago. It was only a few hundred dollars cheaper than a new one so I don't think prices have dropped over here.

Re: Have you considered...

IF there's a good solution I might be persuaded to get one of them nice 50-200 lenses, but only at rock-bottom prices second-hand.
Olympus cannot benefit financially from the majority of pissed-off 4/3rds owners since even shelling out for an E-5 back in the day seemed to be a rare occurrence.
Some year on ... NOW ... will there be demand for another expensive 4/3rds solution?
Or is there hope for some sensible pricing at launch time?
We can only doubt : they have shown their callous disregard for 4/3rds customers.

Rant over : I like my e-P2 better than our e-600 anyway!

Re: Have you considered...

I think there's a sea change in the way photographers see their kit. It used to be (and still is) that many felt that weight and bulk was as or more important than IQ. Now, not withstanding that some of the regular 4/3 glass is the best you can get, there's a perceptible movement towards more portable cameras and associated lenses. Manufacturers are slowly getting into design and production of such lenses, witness the Olympus 45mm and 75mm, and Panasonic's 12-35 and 35-100. So there will be a gradual decrease in the appeal of the larger, bulkier, heavier lenses.

That's my take on it, and shoot me down in flames if you like!

Re: Have you considered...

Olympus are massive in "Imaging" look at their Lab kit they have the technology and the skills - it is whether the market is worth the investment

The Smartphone/Camera market has taken /$ mega billions of the camera market in the last 3 years and now cameras are almost "disposable" items (in younger peoples minds) and the young markets have little or no brand loyalty - its dog eat dog
