Anyone still use one of these?

As a bit of light relief from buy and sell prices.

I've been having my kitchen completley gutted and refitted so I've not had the camera out due to dust(even the E5).
While clearing the kitchen I came across this.

My old slide rule from school,in this day and age I bet these are not used much.

I suppose I could use it as a focus checker.

Re: Anyone still use one of these?

Andy,
That takes me back. I liked to be different and had a cylindrical slide rule which I treasured. I can't find it now. I remember doing my Higher Maths as basic pocket calculators became mass produced and I paid 15 for one circa 1974. I think its usefulness extended to being able to spell ShELL OIL on it's LED display upside dowm

Re: Anyone still use one of these?

Funnily enough I recently uncovered my old Faber Castell slide rule from 1969 - at the time it was the bog's gonads of slide rule and it got me through my engineering degree. I remember using it in my finals and doing long, complex calculations involving trig functions etc. It was remarkable what you could do with it, however I sat and looked at it and realised I no longer had the faintest idea how to use it!!

Re: Anyone still use one of these?

I must've been in the first new-generation of schooling who never got taught how to use them.
Unce the mighty red-LED-calculators appeared the slide rule was a gonner.
By the time Uni exams were on we had very good Casio LCD things, brill. Mine still almost works.

Re: Anyone still use one of these?

Afraid I dumped mine years ago, along with my first Sinclair Scientific. Wish I'd kept them both now.
However, I have a friend (former colleague) who collects slide rules and has even published a book on the subject which still brings him some royalties. He buys a lot for next to nothing at boot fairs and on E-bay. He has some really wierd and wonderful examples and has aquired a lot of friends around the world who share his hobby.

Regards

Re: Anyone still use one of these?

Yep still got mine too. Same one as you Andy in a plastic case. I used to think it was great not to have to use log tables !! I remember the school doing a special order where we all took our money in and bought the same model at a discount. Then just as sixth form got underway there was this new great offer of an LED calculator. Wow that was special and about the size of a brick - luxury.

Re: Anyone still use one of these?

Ah yes.

"O"Levels: Log tables. Slide rules not allowed.
ONC: Slide rules OK. Calculators not allowed
Since then: Calculators all the way.

And - yes I still have my circular slide rule
