Cormorant fishing expedition

At last! Lovely sunshine and hardly a breeze to add to the chilly air temperature.

To celebrate, I took a trip down to Langstone Harbour to see what I could find. The day fulfilled the promise and I had the priviledge to watch this Cormorant fishing. This is an every day event as the fish enter the harbour with the incoming tide but I have not had the good fortune to capture this scene close enough to photograph. Usually they fish towards the middle of the harbour.

The Cormorant swimming alone near the old Hayling Island railway bridge abutments.

It spots a shoal of fish beneath it and dives.

Up it comes with its tasty morsel.

It turns away preventing me getting a shot of the fish entering the gullet. It did turn back to show the obvious lump in its throat.

Any C&C welcome.

Excellent - except for the fish!

Which lens were you using?

Well done Peter - I've been trying for that sort of sequence for ages.

Re: Cormorant fishing expedition

Thanks Davids - Gosh I have got to get used to this christian name before the 18th December.

The equipment used was the E3 + Bigma.

I was hoping that the sight of the sun would help lift the spirits after the last couple of weeks. It was georgeous all day here in Portsmouth.

Thanks David. Most days that I go down to Langstone I come away with something special so I expect we shall have the same sort of luck on the 18th. The use of the warden will make it more certain and I am really looking forward to meeting you all.
I have taken a number of other images that I am processing and gradually adding to my site. The signs are that there will be plenty to see and photograph.

My goodness, those are remarkable pictures.

I can't imagine anybody being able to find anything wrong with any of these pictures, they're amazing.

Goes to show that having the right photographer in the right place, at the right time, with the right camera, the right lens and the right settings works out just fine.

And you call it pure chance!

Re: Cormorant fishing expedition

Amazing sequence, Peter, really special. You deserved that for all the effort you put in.

A cracking sequence well captured Peter, very cool although it would have been even cooloer had the bird had a newspaper stuffed full of chips and a beer to wash it all down with, Oh well perhaps next time

Re: Cormorant fishing expedition

Thank you all for your very kind comments. Nice one Neil - I am about to go to the chippy - made me feel hungry. Here are a couple more, this time of a Great crested Grebe in the same area.

Looking forward to the 18th
