Lincoln's Rock (Flat Rock), Blue Mountains, NSW (image heavy)

A favourite tourist's & local's spot to stop at in the Blue Mountains is Lincoln's Rock (formerly known as Flat Rock) located on the north western part on the Kings Tableland (south east of Wentworth Falls town centre).

We were checking out possible settings for our daughter's wedding photos (the one taking the photos with my Stylus 1) & so, here are some photos of this place that is known as a flat rock (more or less).

1) The view is to the Jamison Valley with Mount Solitary in the middle.

2)

3) Looking south over the flat rock where the tourists do their thing!

4) Looking north from the middle of Flat Rock (& the other tourists)

5)

6) And those that just have to look over the edge. The cliff is further out from this position, but it would definitely hurt falling from here anyhow.

7) And now looking south from the northern end of the rock

8) A lovely Isopogon growing there & Sublime Point in view to the upper right (with the next ridge barely visible that has the Three Sisters on the end of it).

9) Also a nice specimen of the Flannel Flower growing here too.

10) But, if you're curious & go walking a little further southwards along the rock it is possible to go down & someone has made a small cave their home in the past (with more photos in the Landscape gallery).

11) Yep, that's us! You can see the cave home is further back along the little track & the rough weathering of the rock face above.

12) This is directly above the cave house & looking towards Leura & the ridge leading to Sublime Point.

13) And the view to Sublime Point from that standing point.

14) The crop of the above just shows the Three Sisters hiding behind Sublime Point.

All these were taken on the Olympus Stylus 1

I hope you liked these views.

Gosh Ross - perhaps you should have given a "Vertigo Warning" with this set!
We have never been to Lincoln's Rock and I was interested in your link. Such a sad story.

Terrific scenery. Thanks for putting them up. I do like #3...." Back a bit....bit more....bit more....ooops" Should be good for selfies - getting rid of a few!

Very distinctive scenery, though, isn't it? Looks like very soft rock, to erode the way it has.

Great landscape there Ross. Looks like it could be a good spot for wedding photos if the tourists can be persuaded to not walk into the shot. How much haze is here normally?

Sorry Lyn. OK, Vertigo Warning! Is that better now.

Yes it is a sad story of Lincoln, but a great way we can remember him.

Just the place for a few day's camping and a spot of hang gliding.

Thanks Keith. It is sandstone so does weather & also I seemed to have deleted some frames I had taken showing some carved names on the top of the rock. There are many of them but one looked like it had be carved by a stone mason, deep & perfectly formed characters. Maybe that's a good excuse to go back for some more photos.

Thanks. It is & was for my daughter (not seen here) that had her wedding photos here.

The haze can vary depending on the weather. I can only guess that still, warm days are more likely & then low clouds can move into the valleys too though.

Here is a photo I took back in 2009 (13th Sept 5:44 pm) on my E520 from Sublime Point ridge looking west to the next ridge, Echo Point with the Three Sisters on the end of it in view (normally photographed from the other side). It was quite hazy on that late September day with this result.

The other side's view on the morning of 2014 (31st Aug 9:40 am) (E-M1) looking east from Scenic World with Mount Solitary standing out on the right.

Wow what a great place and scenery I'm envious, and what a great backdrop for wedding photos, with some of those rock outcrops and long telephoto I can see some pride and prejudice type images with a billowing wedding dress instead of a cape.

A sad tale indeed, but re-naming the rock in his memory is a fitting tribute. Looks a fantastic location for a special wedding.

It looks like someone used to camp there, but no hang gliding here. It'd be a pretty rough landing in those trees down in the valley. There are walking trails (for the very fit) down there though. Unfortunately, occasionally some get themselves lost (or worse) & have to be rescued.

This site gives a pretty good visual indication of some of those walking tracks (use the zoom key to see more in the map).

You should look at this site with a video/sound clip/slide show of a number of walks & sights. http://www.nationalpass.com.au/

This site shows a bit more & mentions the

I like that walk!

Thanks Paul. They did get some photos with the blowing veil, but thankfully it stayed on her head unlike others that I've heard of that weren't so lucky.

OK, since you liked those photos, here's a couple more from Scenic World.

And a telephoto shot of the (morning backlit) Three Sisters.

Yes John. It is a nice out of the way place but only for the photos. There are no facilities there at all.

Just to show it was a success for the wedding photos here, I've added two from the occasion to show it (with permission from the bride & groom).
