Green Hairstreak - first capture!

We have been photographing butterflies for a few years now and having been lucky enough to see most of the species which frequent these parts, it was great to see several Green Hairstreaks flitting around a May tree this afternoon -

Taken with the OM-D E-M1 M11, 12-100mm lens.

Regards,
Ann1e

Re: Green Hairstreak - first capture!

Anne, I have never seen a Green Hairstreak nor dreamt that such a creature existed. Full marks for composition and critically sharp captures. The lighting is magic.

I was expecting to see a selfie of you with a trendy coiffure ... oh well ...

Nice shots Ann1e. You are getting that 12-100 to do some pretty nice close up shots. How close did you have to get to get those?

Re: Green Hairstreak - first capture!

Well done. I have seen one only once, at a local nature reserve, two or three years ago. No chance of a shot.

Thank you for commenting, Phill -

I really enjoy using the 12-100 - it is certainly almost becoming an all purpose lens for me especially for travelling 'light'. These shots were probably taken somewhere between 18 inches and about four feet away. We were able to get pretty close as these butterflies seemed to tolerate our presence admirably unlike many other species! As we are often out and about in search of red kite and kingfishers on the other side of the canal bank, we tend to use the 40-150, with 1.4 converter, on these occasions. We didn't have this lens yesterday as we were going on to a local floating market later in the day. Only when we have access to the car do I normally have both as I find the camera with the two lenses a bit of a strain on my back these days!

Regards,
Ann1e

Mark -

Thanks for comments on my pix.

So sorry to disappoint - green's just so 'not me', haha! I think the only time I have turned green is during a very unpleasant channel crossing en route to the South of France in 1962, a journey I took with a school friend and her family when another traveller was Michael Aspel, a well known TV newsreader at the time!

Regards,
Ann1e
