Stop Press! My contribution!

My effort at photo journalism paid off as my pic was used in this week's edition of the local paper. Not really stop press - doesn't happen too often with the local press. Barrie and I happened to be walking along the High Street when a fire engine passed and turned into a side street where Berkhamsted School stands. It was followed by another and another ... until five vehicles were in attendance - not surprisingly as the fire was in a cottage adjacent to the school.

Not exactly a national scoop but still quite pleasing to get a mention!

I have to come clean and say this was not taken with an Olympus camera as it was a chance shot and I just had a 'pocket' camera with me!

Regards,
Ann1e

A feather in your cap for that, Anne - Aside from the photo credit I hope they rewarded you with a handsome sum

The School owns a lot of properties and land in Berkhamsted. I worked for 10 years in what used to be the girls' school.

When I saw your occupation some time ago, I assumed that was at a school in Watford, rather than in Berkhamsted, although maybe you did that after your stint in the latter.

Coincidentally, I was going to join Chevvy's golf club dyslexia post to ask you if you did your apprenticeship at de Havillands (I know you mentioned Rolls Royce), as my 'bestest' friend at school did an apprenticeship in the drawing office there. That would have been in 1961 and I think her father was also in the drawing office at the time.

Ann1e

Ann1e, my Aunt known as Meg Neville (but actually Mary) started her Draughtswoman Apprenticeship at De Havillands there and then transferred to Vickers Armstrong maybe your Bestest friend knew her ? she had had Polio and wore a caliper set on her right leg (maybe left .. long time ago now)

I served my apprenticeship at de Havillands and stayed on after. Through a series of mergers and takeovers, the site ended up as Rolls Royce. When RR closed the site in the early 90s (an ugly asset stripping exercise!), I got a job as a science technician at Berkhamsted Girls' School, until I retired. I found working in the school far more rewarding (though not remuneratively) than working at RR.

Well done for being first on the scene. And it only cost you a box of matches. Hmmmm. I see a pattern emerging.

H'mmm, I've had plenty of letters in EDP, but never managed a photo! Well, not a photo that could be considered photojournalism, anyway. Congrats!

Re: Stop Press! My contribution!

Thanks for all the comments - it was just a question of being in the right place at the right time, which doesn't happen too often, and the absence of an in house photographer!

Ann1e

Haha - so you are familiar with the technique - it was somewhat embarrassing when five engines attended!
