Alien Life Form

This weird thing is only 1cm high and at the risk of spreading misinformation, I'd say is the lichen Claronia Diversa, but these things are hard to pin down.

It's usually more like this patch, which was a foot away:

Re: Alien Life Form

Really weird aren't they!

I was hoping to see the EXIF, but it's gone awol from the pictures. What lens did you use?

Also, what does this stuff grow on, and how would I recognise if from a few feet away? I have looked it up, so please don't send me to let me Google that for you, but the only pictures I can find are also close-ups.

Sorry, I must change my PS settings to keep the EXIF. It was the 50mm macro, cam rested on my rucksack because I forgot the tripod

Re how to spot it. Assuming you mean lichen that are like this, i.e. Cladonia, they mostly live on rotten vegetation, tree stumps etc. This lot were on a very mossy sandstone block. The giveaway is the sage green colour of the lichen against the darker rich greens of the mosses.

It does, thank you.

I hope I'll be able to find some because it looks a fascinating plant form, but I've done a quick sweep of Google / Flickr and I'm not altogether sure if it's found this far south.
