Olympus Air A01

This is discontinued camera, but some people are intrigued by the concept and it's my camera of choice so I thought I might share some thoughts here.

Pro photographers like their camera to feel like a solid piece of equipment, but I see it as something I can have handy in my handbag for those times when the cell phone camera just won't do.

Size and weight is for me the overriding consideration and Micro Four Thirds sensor with minimal paraphernalia seems the sensible solution.

Relying on the touch display of my cell phone keeps the price and weight down, but more importantly it gives me a remote view finder. Thus I can be be part of the scene but also it's nice to set the camera on a small tripod and take closeup macros or other shots from interesting angles without having to get down there with the camera.

For me it's a learning opportunity to take my photography from point and click... to actually understanding trade-offs like aperture, shutter speed and ISO without major financial commitment. If I ever do need to print poster size images I suppose I could hire more professional gear and apply the same principles, but in general the 16Mpixel sensor is quite good enough for what I want.

There are some limitations and some I hope to address if I can. If it's Ok with U guys, I will add them to this thread so anyone who wants to know more about Oly Air can find them in one place.

Re: Olympus Air A01

Please do, I'm interested as I've never come across the Air before. At first glance it doesn't look very ergonomic when it comes to hand-held shooting but I may be missing something!

Re: Olympus Air A01

I vaguely remember reading about the Air A01. 16MP is plenty to print up to A3 size.

Re: Olympus Air A01

I gave the Air some serious consideration, for aerial photography, but it was quickly overtaken by other systems.

Its great to see someone who is using it with similar usage ideas that I had.

It's designed to attach to a smartphone but you can operate it via the phone without the camera unit physically connected:

You could even get a pistol grip for it.

That is definitely one of the issues I have: It fits snugly in my hand, but it's a very unwieldy contraption and the cell phone viewfinder is laggy and unpredictable.

One thing I want to try is 3D printing a pistol grip that operates the shutter release and a simple optical target sight for BIF (Bird in Flight photography) so it becomes exactly like shooting birds... just without actually hurting them

Re: Olympus Air A01

Is a pistol grip a safe method in this modern world?
Its bad enough being questioned by security guys (yes they are usually male) in shopping malls when carrying a DSLR.

lol - IKR, but I shall avoid politics for now.
My first real gripe is the lack of a timer in the app... It means I'm gunna be operating my cell phone remote in every picture I take.

Re: Olympus Air A01

I recall the camera being launched but then the press interest died and I have heard little since. I would like to hear how you get on with it and how easy you find it to use.

I seem to remember a while back, someone designed and marketed a rifle grip for cameras which was literally a rifle stock with a camera mount. I wonder how long you would survive in any city centre using one of those now ?

Ah, that was either the Russian Photosniper accessory or the various Novoflex grips including their Follow Focus line.

IKR, especially here in Christchurch where I live... just around the block was a mass shooting in March... I don't suppose I will get away with putting a sight on it either then ... maybe I could make it look like a camera...

A bit like this you mean?
An old Soviet Zenit Fotosnaiper gunstock, with a home made Arca style clamp; seen here fitted with an E-M1 Mk2. 300mm F4 and a Red Dot Sight.
I never did have the 300mm Tair lens and modified Zenit B, but bought the gunstock as an ebay item on its own; The modified body had an extra shutter release on the base, set off by a little finger sticking upwards, and coupled internally to the trigger.

The kit is intended for Bird in Flight attempts, but since I've completed it, I've never been at a suitable venue, whilst having it with me.

Unfortunately, the E-M1 Mk2 has a deeper grip, so won't fit in the space available. Mk1 fits fine with the grip.

The trigger now, is internally coupled to a pair of contacts from an old relay, but I need to do more work on that, as there isn't enough feedback on the trigger from half to full press.
