Birdsville - Population: Anything between 140 and 9000

In south-western Queensland at the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert is Birdsville. It usually has a population of about 140 people, but this number increases by anything up to around 9000 people during the first weekend in September when the Birdsville Races are held.

More here: http://www.thediamantina.com.au/birdsville and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birdsville

I (intentionally) visited Birdsville the week after the races. In my way into Birdsville I met a constant stream of 4x4 vehicles, most towing off-road caravans, which were coming from the direction of Birdsville.

The iconic Birdsville Hotel. Anything that happens in Birdsville (except for the Races) happens here.

Across the road from the Birdsville Hotel is the airport.

Inside the pub at the Birdsville Hotel.

Another view of the Birdsville Hotel

Lunch! I had already eaten most of the fish. You should have seen it before I started.

There were still people in the pub. - Left over from the Races.

Snuck in a quick shot when most of the 4x4 vehicles had been replaced by motorcycles.

Strategically located aircraft parking right across the road from the pub.

There is a famous bakery there, but I didn't visit it.

Ruins of the old Royal Hotel.

The Cenotaph - Most Australian towns have one, but we'll make an exception for Betoota.

Believe me, it was! Or maybe I was just very hungry. The wine wasn't too bad either. Amazing what you can find in the Outback.

I think that it might have been 3 or 4 smaller ones. That plate was FULL!

Gotta have a little rabbit food 'cause it's supposed to 'healthy'.

I must confess I tend to only add cucumber & tomatoes with fish & chips with my wife & daughter getting better salad ingredients together.
