Venomous Snake Show (lots of photos).

If you suffer from ophiophobia (or herpetophobia), then look away.

While visiting the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mt Tomah there was a .......

Re: Venomous Snake Show (lots of photos).

We've only got three snakes in mainland U.K. (there are none in Northern Ireland, and none in Ireland). Only one, the Adder is venomous.

I like snakes!

One venomous one is more than enough for me

Re: Venomous Snake Show (lots of photos).

Snakes are fascinating but I like to keep a respectful distance from the venomous ones, of which you seem to have plenty in Australia.

My young Labrador was bitten by an adder in late November last year. It's unusual for adders to be active then but the mean temperature for the month was about 1.5C above the norm. It took him nearly a month to recover and the hair has not regrown in the area of the bite.

I didn't know until very recently, but we now have four native species. Apparently a couple of years ago, the Barred Grass Snake was recognised as a separate species,

"The barred grass snake, Natrix helvetica, is now recognised as a species in its own right distinct from the common or eastern grass snake (Natrix natrix).

Both snakes can be found in lowland areas of southern England. Unlike the adder (Vipera berus), neither creature is venomous. The only other British snake, the smooth snake (Coronella austriaca), is also non-venomous and extremely rare.
"

There is a fourth snake species, not sure if the above is the one. I have been told that they are escapees from collections, and there are two locations where they can be found.. South East of England, and North Wales.

Not an expert, I think they called it a Large European...Others will have more knowledge than me...……..

I also like snakes and enjoy looking and photographing them, from a distance..

Re: Venomous Snake Show (lots of photos).

Thanks for all the comments & information on snakes in the UK too.

There was another display outdoors at Mt Tomah on the day too.

There was one person so engrossed with the handler talking about the carpet snake (non-venemous) they were holding that they didn't notice there was another snake right near their head until alerted to it.

That's the Aesculapian snake which is found in small numbers in the Chester area and part of London. It's common enough on the Continent but is not technically native to this country. It's not venomous.
