EM5 Cracks below the screen

I just noticed that my EM5 has started developing small cracks around the screw below the LCD. A bit research tells me that this is a common issue and my serial number is between the reported serial numbers.

I have checked with Olympus support and they have asked me to ship the EM5 but didnt tell me about the charges. My EM5 is just outside the 2 years warranty period and was purchased from John Lewis.

Just wondering if anyone has been in similar circumstance and will Olympus treat it as a warranty repair?

Re: EM5 Cracks below the screen

Quite a few EM5's suffered from this problem early on and I know that Olympus was repairing under guarantee, but I've not heard of any cases where the repair has been done outside the warranty period. I would advise you to specifically check this with Olympus before sending it.

I have been aware of the crack on mine since it was first reported, but I decided not to do anything about it, rather than face the hassle of sending it away and not having it for several weeks. I'm certain that the crack is cosmetic rather than structural and it's not getting any worse. In fact, had I not read about the problem I probably would still be blissfully unaware of it. However, it should never have happened and I can appreciate why people do want it rectified.

Re: EM5 Cracks below the screen

I think I may have read on mu43 of individuals who have had their EM5's fixed out of warranty. In your position I'd complain if Olympus refuse to fix it free of charge, it is after all a systematic build issue (or design error).
I had mine fixed just within the warranty period, month 11 of 12.

Re: EM5 Cracks below the screen

Not sure how Olympus capped the range of serial numbers, mine was nowhere near, but they still fixed it. Didn't cost me a penny, WEX arranged for the camera to be picked up by DHL, and returned just over a week latter.

Re: EM5 Cracks below the screen

It is mostly cosmetic & generally caused by over tightening of the screws. They should still honour a free repair (replacement of the bezel), but I would check first. Also, I don't think they'd want customers complaining on forums for not repairing that free just because it is a little outside warranty, being a known small fault.

The original Olympus service note covered the affected range of serial numbers: BEK501001 BEK508887 (black) BF4501001 BF4503865 (silver)

If your camera be listed in one of the above serial number batches it is worth giving Olympus service a ring.

Re: EM5 Cracks below the screen

Thanks for the responses. I will check with Olympus service again and happy that noone has been charged so far for this service.

I dont like to part with my camera for 10 days and waiting for the most boring 10 days to send my camera

Re: EM5 Cracks below the screen

Mine cracked as well but I have not sent it back as the reports were that it was cosmetic. The camera is now out of warranty. I did however very very slightly loosen the screw.

Re: EM5 Cracks below the screen

I have just sent my camera to Olympus as it developed the crack and mine is with in the serial number range and out of warranty, the Olympus guy on the the phone said there would not be a charge for fixing it so I will have to wait and see if this is correct.
