Portable Storage (on the move)
In this day and age, where people are all talking of Cloud storage and etc, What do you use as a backup storage media when you are on the move?
I use a vosonic VP8860 but it's now showing it's age. I am looking into another lighter device that I can use. The current SmartPhone can do almost everything the laptop did but it short of a ORF developer and a SD/CF reader. (ok, xD reader is not heard of now) There is now the Western Digital My Passport Wireless But that do not support the CF which I still use with my E-330. So what the next best way I can use to read those ORF, then pack them into the Cloud or as backups of those memory chips? |

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
I am going to use an OTG cable to my tablet, these let you read directly from you camera to your tablet /phone using the Olympus cable (works on Android, can't vouch for apple). That way you can copy both JPEG & ORF files.
My plan is to back up only the "best" photos to the 128gb SD card in my tablet, I guess I'll have plenty of space. I am also fortunate enough to have free WiFi coverage at the hotel we are staying in this year so I will also back up from the tablet to my cloud storage when time alows.

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
Hi blue, not sure if the following is helpful? I use my iPad, not essentially for back up but for viewing images and this works fine with my em1 and my em5mk2 with either the oly view app(WIFI) or direct by cable. As for storage iPads come in various capacities, but there will be certain drawbacks. Their are quite a few portable hard drives now which cover quite a large storage Gb. I think it's mainly a matter of how they are powered to be your main decision.

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
Looking at martyjward, that got me searching in Ebay.
Oly Cameras can be set to Storage when USB is detected. So I think that would work. Just save that. ![]() |

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
I haven't tried this but look at a RAVPower File Hub. App on a smartphone connects to hub it has an sd slot and a usb slot into which you can plug a high capacity flash drive (USB 2.0 only I think) and use the phone app transfer from card to drive. Also it will act as Wifi hub when hotel only allows say two device connection and you have four or more.

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
Sorry missed out that the RAVPower will also charge a smartphone.
BTW I have in the past used my iPad 64GB as backup using the Apple SD reader. Can view the embedded JPeg and using Photosmith flag and star them and sync that to my PC based LR when I get home, but it is a bit clunky. On my Aus trip I took my laptop, saved to an external drive and to flash drives and snail mailed the flash drives home. The latter was a six week 3500 capture trip.

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
Most devices that accept a USB storage device (including car mp3 player) will also accept a usb card reader... provided it is a single slot device and not a multi format reader. The latter require device drivers so that each slot can de seen as a different drive letter (on windows) or different external device (linux based devices including Macs and android). The former don't need specialised drives so generally work as expected. This helps a lot when trying to find something that can read SD, MMC (remember that), or CF cards.

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
I'm going to try copying to tablet (Nexus 7) via OTG cable or OiShare then, due to the tablet being mostly full of music, back to a portable HDD via the OTG cable.

It will work to USB sticks though if you have any big enough. I just buy an extra SD Card whenever I go away, you soon end up with enough to use while travelling ![]() Last edited by PaulB; 7th July 2015 at 01:48 PM. Reason: Autocorrect changing words... bloomin nuisance! ! |

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
The Nexus has enough oomph through the port to run the HDD. I've used both Western Digital & Samsung drives whilst transferring files without too much of a hit to the battery. Unfortunately it doesn't have expandable memory but copying back to an SD card would be a good way of getting more camera food.. :-)

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
Hi Paulb I have a HDD portable hard drive and works fine on my Lenovo android tablet I also have a dual cable the one end can be attached to a battery power pack which can be got from LIDLS for £9.95 it has 2 USB sockets and a Mini socket you can charge your divise to at the same time.
Well worth the £9.95 I Think. I have 2 samsung portable drive 500GB and a 380gb drive. Dave

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
I'm considering an external SSD as they're light and durable.
I'm looking to see if a multi OTG adapter will allow me to use my Android phone to transfer from SD to SSD. (The battery in my phablet is pretty impressive and can actually power a usb hdd and charge another phone!) David.

Re: Portable Storage (on the move)
I think I found a solution.
I ordered this Kingston unit. The Ravpower looked interesting, but, ironically, I can't buy this in China. More than just a portable storage solution! ![]() David.
