Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

It's a shame that there isn't a way to charge bots for their access and the info that they gain.

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

Bots are basically good because they raise the profile of the site. Very often when I search for something Olympus-related an e-group post ranks on the results page. Without bots this would not happen.

If it's a distraction, I can turn off the guests indicator on the activity status.

John
The AP site breaks the visitors into two totals - bots and humans. Is that possible on this software?

Incidentally I quite often access this and other sites from my Kindle and do not bother logging in so on these occasions I would be in the "guest" total, not the members.

You will be logged as if you were using the site via a web browser, so basically no difference.

The trouble with all of these is AI development is running ahead of them - reCAPTCHA has been beaten multiple times by AI's as have most of the similar technologies - they are designed to keep out the script kiddies who don't have access to the advanced stuff. As Ian says many bots are beneficial, just not well written so they leave a trace when they visit - best ignore the number.

I think the admin community do a grand job of spotting any oddities pretty quickly

Regards
Andy

Re: The reality is that the e-group needs your help

I appreciate all that Ian has done and is trying. I'm however going to leave the group as I feel the way I want to see photos is not reflected in this forum. I also feel I should pay a subscription which I would do if it met my needs. The info and tips are great but I want to see galleries of photos. To see Pic of the day for example I have to go into each post. To load new images takes many menu jumps. I have taken on board that possible sponsorship will come with new people but like sites such as Photocrowd or flickr even, I for one want to see galleries on the first page I come to. Maybe the text format of forums needs a fresh approach. I bow out and wish you good fortune for the future.

Crikey, you have been around for some time...…

Well done on your Challenge entry, so you have the Mojo so to speak.

Don't see why you have to depart, I certainly use Flickr and enjoy the banter and E-friendship there. But really enjoy that here too. Multi-enjoyment if that's a possibility...………….

Changes are afoot, so do keep an eye on things.

Well done on your challenge entry.

Don't want to take away from your success in the challenge, but I was surprised to read that you feel you want to pay a subscription, when in the nearly seven years you have been a member you have only made 44 posts and liked a post by someone else 3 times.

This site is meant (I Think) to be a forum for discussion and exchanging ideas not a photo hosting site like Flickr or 500px. Hosting sites are simply showcases of photos with people just clicking the like button and making the occasional comment.

I hope the changes referred to by Ian don't lose the interactivity and helpful exchanges that make this place work so well. Of course some technical aspects and the presentation of images can certainly be modernised.

Sorry you want to leave.

Presumably now that the forum is closed during the hours of darkness the running costs will also be reduced?

The forum is not closed overnight, just one thread as a temporary measure as we felt it was getting a little out of hand. It was not closed last night and we hope there is no future need to repeat this action.
