Cleaning lens contacts.

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question, Is is ok to clean lens contacts with a cotton bud and methylated spirit ?

A teleconverter of mine has ceased to function and the camera states....

"Communications between the camera and lens is faulty, clean the lens contacts".

I have given them a wipe with a dry cotton bud and the fault persists so wondered if a wipe with some form of cleaner is worth a go.

Thanks in advance

Re: Cleaning lens contacts.

Personally I would use isopropyl alcohol - methylated alcohol contains additives, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol. Cotton buds can shed fibres, instead I'd use a PecPad or similar, or a lint free cloth, maybe a microfibre.

+1
It's also a better solvent for oils etc. than meths.
iso-propanol, propan-2-ol & rubbing alcohol are other names for it, though at work we call it IPA -no beer at work .

Re: Cleaning lens contacts.

If you don't have or can't get isopropyl alcohol then use Metho but buff the residue off afterwards & all should be fine. Sometimes it might be necessary to use something like a soft pencil rubber to clean back the contact surfaces (if with a dark dullness) & then follow it up with the solvent cleaner.

Re: Cleaning lens contacts.

I've got a can of Maplin Electrical Solvent Cleaner at home. It seems to be good stuff. I used it to resurrect my dead E-30 camera by spraying a small amount under the on/off switch, working the switch back and forth a few times and then blowing it out with a Rocket blower. Probably not recommended but it worked.

Re: Cleaning lens contacts.

You can use a biro insert to gently depress the spring contacts, muck collects at the bottom of those too.

Re: Cleaning lens contacts.

Hi guys,

Many thanks for the replies this site is full of great advice so thanks again.

I tried a few different things cleaning contacts and checking spring contacts etc.

In the end no joy so sent it off to H Lehmann so hopefully it can be repaired.
