Forthcoming Group Meets

I’m hoping to arrange a few more group meets this year than I managed in 2013. Further details to come of each event in a separate thread nearer the time. Additional dates may be added if there is enough demand. For now, though, here is a provisional list. No need to register an interest at this stage but comments welcome.

Sunday 25th May. Buttercups at Hatfield Forest. This is the time of the year that millions – no, billions – of buttercups carpet the forest plains with an explosion of colour.

Saturday 31st May. Thaxted Morris Dancing. Spectacular and colourful dancing in the streets as dozens of sides from all over the country descend upon this quaint old village.

Saturday 14th June. Tudor life at Kentwell Hall (Suffolk) in one of the country’s largest and most impressive re-enactments.

Sunday 31st August. Landscape photography at Alresford Creek (Essex coast near Colchester) with an optional early start for the sunrise. Opportunity in the afternoon to visit a nearby restored watermill.

Saturday 13th September. Lincoln Steampunk Festival. There’s bound to be loads of interesting characters to photograph as Europe’s largest steampunk gathering takes to the historic streets of the city.

Sunday 26th October. Gibberd Garden. Autumn colours in the unique setting of the private garden designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, the planner of Harlow New Town. We won’t hold that against him, because the garden is a delightful combination of natural beauty and an eclectic mix of sculptures collected by the architect over his lifetime.

Looking forward to attending some of these if possible. (What on earth is a steampunk?)

My own definition of Steampunk would be:-

A neo-gothic modern sub-culture based upon retro science fiction, in which a future is envisaged with Victorian technology re-invented and updated, particularly steam power.

Here's a link to a more thorough explanation.

Hope this helps.

Re: Forthcomming Group Meets

I can recommend the Gibberd garden. The sort of place not many people have herd of.
My late in-laws used to live in Wivenhoe and I used to walk along the Colne to Alresford creek quite often, so another recommendation.

I'll try and make one or two if not more of these.

Some good locations there John.
I'll start working on some "day release passes".

Re: Forthcomming Group Meets

These look great - unfortunately, because of prior commitments it looks like I can only probably make Lincoln, but steaming a bit of punk sounds like a fun way to spend an afternoon

Hi John, you excite me with postings of outings in England but I am afraid it is rather a long trip for me on all occasions. I know all of you will enjoy yourselves!!

I know you'd love to be here and I wish you could, Bill. We'll just have to post lots of pictures for you.

Re: Forthcomming Group Meets

Came across a Faerie Fair and Steam Punk meet-up in Glastonbury recently, great atmosphere in the town and lots of photo opportunities. Worth looking out for the next event.

Re: Forthcomming Group Meets

Shame, there were some really beautiful and photogenic young women with fabulous pointy ears. Each to their own.

After reading this (with, it must be admitted, not a little mounting excitment and anticipation), "beautiful and photogenic young women with fabulous pointy"......... it must be said that the next word, "ears" was slightly disappointing!

Nevertheless, it sounds a fun event with great photo opportunities, I just wish I lived nearer.
