Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

Had a fantastic (if chilly!) day at the Lea Valley White Water Centre. I have created an album in the e-group gallery here:

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/1405

I have added 24 shots so far - I took almost a thousand! So plenty more to come. Here is a selection:

All taken with an Olympus E-5 and Zuiko Digital 50-200 SWD, processed from RAW in Lightroom 4.

More to come, including some taken with a ZD 90-250.

Ian

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

Absolutely fabulous Ian. I tried to change plans to get along, but it was not to be.

Were you quite close to the action? It looks as though you were. I feel very envious. I hope I might get something half as good as this in August, but I doubt the Olympic seating will allow spectators to get that close.

I may consider hiring the 50-200 for the event as I only have the 70-300 which will probably not be fast enough

Hi Shirley, have you checked if there are any restrictions on taking cameras into Olympic events?

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

Ooo I really do not know and there seems to be little on the internet to tell you. However I did find this booklet available for sale on the 2012 website

http://shop.london2012.com/Capture-t...efault,pd.html

This would indicate that they are expecting photographers to be takings pics

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

I have done a bit more research and found this on a photography blog

"Buried away on page 278 of the book, it says:

You are allowed to take camera phones, compact cameras and DSLRs into Olympic and Paralympic venues as long as the equipment fits into a bag no bigger than 30 x 20 x 20cm. .... Tripods and flash photography are not permitted within the venues.

Wow. 30 x 20 x 20cm? That's surprisingly big.

I made a point of asking Mr Hooper whether this really was official LOCOG policy. His answer was that yes, these dimensions came from LOCOG. The book is an official London 2012 publication and these are the official guidelines. The intention is to allow DSLRs with lenses up to about a 300mm f/4. (Having said that, he also opined that LOCOG perhaps hadn't thought through the exact specification very thoroughly.)"

PS Sorry your thread has been hijacked Ian but I thought it might be of interest to others, I will create a new thread if you think it more appropriate.

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

There is supposed to be a good white water centre at the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay. There were a couple of good shots in a club competition I judged recently.

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

Some real crackers here and in the gallery Ian.

Can I ask what focus mode you were using (S-AF, C-AF or M) and what AF area (single, dynamic or all) as you really seemed to nail the focus throughout the series?

Many thanks.

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

I mainly used C-AF using 5 points in a diamond, with the centre at the centre - if you get my meaning.

These shots are mostly cropped and re-framed in post processing of course.

Thanks Ian. I tend to use the 5 points but have had more sucess with S-AF in the past. I must give C-AF another try sometime as it obviously works!

You've got some real crackers. The second in this set is my favourite.

Looks like you had a great time and experience. Stunning shots Ian.
Really hoping to get hold of a E5 next year hopping price falls before then.
Will look forward to viewing the gallery later.
Thanks for the shots shown

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

Even more amazing shots, I am now beginning to be rather pleased I didn't get there...it could have proved to be rather embarrassing

Thanks for sharing, something to aspire to.
