Exclamation Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

I'm going along to this event this coming Saturday:

Saturday 14 April - Ticket for Tesco Canoe Slalom 2012 Selection Trials

The website is here: http://www.eventelephant.com/gbcanoe...sforlondon2012

The hope is that we will see some great white water canoe action at the 2012 Olympic venue near Enfield, north of London. It's good value at roughly 6 per person and there is free parking, but I think you need to book in advance at the site above.

I will try to bring the E-M5 with me, although it's being borrowed back again today. I will have to check.

If you are likely to go, let me know so we can meet up

Ian

Sounds interesting, however I need to get "permission" first.

Don't think the weather sounds that good for the weekend either!

Yes I am very interested as I have tickets for the Olympics Canoe Slalom in August, it would be nice to get an idea of the lie of the land. However, I must admit I am not keen on sitting outside in the cold and rain and the forecast is not too good, so I may wait until later in the week to make a decision. I will let you know if I decide to come.
Thanks

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

I find the weather forecast has been pretty unreliable recently, and often positively

But yes, there is a danger that the weather could be iffy. Nevertheless, we're all booked - my daughter, Elizabeth, has also joined the group so there will be at least 6 of us, although not all photographers.

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

Thanks for the heads-up on this Ian. I've booked a ticket (what a bargain).

The Olympic Test events are great. I was at the Road Cycling Test event (as a marshal so no pictures but had a view of the race that 'literally' had my eyeballs out - not sure I want the same job come the actual event(s). Also managed to get a ticket for the Track Cycling test event which was fantastic and I could take pictures as just there as a spectator.

Excellent - PM me a mobile number and we'll make arrangements.

Loved to have been there as it's only up the road from me but family duties already booked.

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

It's the sort of opportunity I once would have jumped at but present circumstances make it difficult. Hope you have a great day, Ian, and I look forward to seeing some pictures.

Hi John - is this just down to transportation or something else?

A combination of factors, Ian. Transport is certainly an issue, having recently sold my car it means that if I borrow Debbie's at the weekend she is effectively marooned at home. Then there is the cost of fuel, the ticket and lunch - unless I take a packed lunch with me but then it's one more thing to carry. For a shoot like this I'd need to carry the E-3 and 40-150mm or 70-300mm anyway and I'm getting rather concerned about my steadily falling level of fitness. Another concern is that some days I'm now experiencing problems holding a long lens steady, even with IS.

What I really need to do is put things like this on hold for the next few months to see how my finances work out with the adjustments I'm currently making and in the meantime try to motivate myself to get out more often for short walks, gradually increasing the distance to hopefully improve my fitness. I should be in a better position then to know what I can and cannot do, both finacially and physically!

I am already committed to the London evening meet on 11th May. I'll be meeting Bill Gordon, who's comming over from Canada (not just for this event, he was planning to come anyway ), earlier in the day and we'll join the group at the arranged time. For that I can travel light, armed with just a Pen and 14-45mm (although I recently sold my E-P3 twin lens kit I've just replaced it with a secondhand E-PL1 at a fraction of the cost!). With this in mind I really don't feel able to commit myself to other events at the moment.

Those are the main reasons why I feel I must pass on this one, but it sounds a great event with hopefully some marvellous photo opportunities. I hope you get a few people along and have a great day.

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

The Lea Valley venue isn't too far from you - I could pick you up? I'm told the seating isn't finished so you would need to bring a camping chair or similar.

Ian, that's really kind but you have to drive past the venue to get to me. Collecting and returning me would add an extra 135 miles to your journey!

Also, I'm really not sure how I would cope at the moment at this type of event. For instance it might involve a lot of standing to get the photographs and this morning I felt flakey standing in a queue for 10 minutes! I'm actually better at walking than standing and I do need to work on my fitness, I've let myself get in a bit of a state!

Thanks for your offer, it's really appreciated but I think I should pass on this occasion.

Re: Lee Valley White Water this Saturday?

And as is usual with the timings of these things I have now come down with a stinking cold so don't think I'll be up for the event which I'm really annoyed about. If anybody wants my ticket drop me a PM and I can mail it over.
