Posting the location of your shots...

Hi All

I spotted a post by John Baker earlier this morning asking where someone had taken their shots and it made me think... (careful, I don't do that very often )

I thought it would be a good idea if people could perhaps use Google maps to post a link to where a particular shot was taken, or where they feel there are good photo opportunities to be had. This could then eventually build up into an extremely useful resource for when anyone wants to try their hand at a certain type of shot, or when they happen to be in the vicinity of the shot - they could research the thread, and easily plan to take a visit.

Thoughts...?

John,

What you are suggesting is a manual form of geotagging.

I think its a great idea.

Mine are fairly simple so here they are

Bowood house and grounds
Wilton Windmill
Crofton Beam engine

When I next upload somephotos, weather permitting, I will try to add the location.

Hmm. Seems to work for me.. You need to be adept at opening two browsers or two tabs - but it can be done :-)

Well I often include a written location in my descriptions - but didn't bother with those, but there again it is the same canal stretch I've referred to before.

I've replied in the other thread to Johns queries.

Hey - do I have to master Multimap and links, the E-3 is challenging enough!

But as I tend to repeat myself can I say something about 'locations'. We tend to collect locations, in the same way as we 'collect' lenses and editing programs. A good location will let us take 'better' (whatever that means) photographs, hence the lists that keep appearing in photo mags.

Practically everything I've posted recently has been from 'locations' within walking distance of my house, I live in a typical urban setting, these shots are from typical areas that can be found in/around town, they are nothing special.

So how about for every location we visit we spend the same amount of time - including travel - really looking at a 'location' within walking distance (or at least no further away than Tescos). I think you'll be surprised at what you find - I know I have been.

I am happy to do this. Am a tad busy today but I can knock something together over the next few days.

Re: Posting the location of your shots...

I tend to geotag pretty much everything I post on Flickr. I like knowing where a photo has been taken - and I assume others do as well.

To be honest, I tend not to post to the gallery here often because I have to resize pix to do it - and it's one of the 1 x 10E10 things I don't get around to doing as often as I intend to.

Re: Posting the location of your shots...

I'm not sure how to use Google Maps, but I do sometimes tag pictures on my blog using Flash Earth.

This is an example, it's Keyhaven

Just click on the black area to open the aerial map
