Re: Wanted Macro... Sigma 105? 50mm, 35mm?

I have the three lenses you mention, ZD 50mm, Sigma 105mm and Sigma 150mm.

All lenses produce excellent results but I've found the one that gets the most use, for macro work, is the Sigma 150mm, it's a great lens and I'd recommend buying one, if you can find one for sale.

Thanks, looks like the 105 and or 150 are best bets..so if anyone sees one posted do please let me know. I see there is one 150mm one with a queue so won't hope on that one lol.

Re: Wanted Macro... Sigma 105? 50mm, 35mm?

I have in fact ordered a 35mm macro lens....having taken a lot of pictures yesterday with my 70-300 and a x2 diopter adapter in front of it I was still dissapointed in the results and manually supporting the camera and lens, chasing bugs that do not stand still just reminded me that the lower weight of the macro 35mm will be a huge benefit!

Re: Wanted Macro... Sigma 105? 50mm, 35mm?

I have the 50mm f2 which gives super sharp results but I must admit that it is not ideal for bugs because:

1. The small working distance means getting too close to some bugs resulting in rapid departure.

2. Very slow to focus if going for high magnification and, as the lens barrel just about doubles it's length in the process, again results in an even quicker departure.

If the 70-300mm doesn't do the job then the next best option, to preserve working distance, must be the Sigma 150mm - if you can get one.

Some bugs and especially spiders will allow a close approach if you use stealth tactics but butterflies and dragonflies are not so forgiving.

I mainly use the Leica 14-150mm with either the EC14 (ideal as it preserves the 50cm working distance) or the EX25 but if I am using the lens alone I carry an Opteka 10x HD Macro lens with me which can give stunning detail, once you know how to use it (and it only cost 25) and which saves having to remove the lens to place the converter/adapter.

Regards

David

Eeeek......I just looked at the price

Gorgeous lens - you're very fortunate.

Thankfully, the Opteka 10x HD Macro lens does look like a possible... Might get one of those

James,
You could try to get a 58mm diameter Sigma Achromatic macro lens diopter for your 70-300mm. I did from eBay for 10. Many people believe the Oly 70-300 is actually the same as the Sigma 70-300 and this diopter was designed for that lens. They don't make the achromatic diopters anymore though I believe Canon do one similar. There is a 52mm one on eBay at present. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sigma-Achromat...item3f090bbd51. You could get a step down adapter. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/58mm-52mm-58-5...item3a64b785b6

Here's a shot I took with mine. The stamen was about 4-5mm in height. The depth of field is a bugger though - if it's hand held breathing takes you out of focus.

Re: Wanted Macro... Sigma 105? 50mm, 35mm?

Regarding the Opteka x10 HD Macro lens, which has four elements, these are a couple of shots using this lens. The first of the Ladybird romance is with the Leica 14-150mm at 58mm and the second of the hunting spider (pisaura mirabilis - body about 1cm long) with the ED 50mm f2 Macro. Both at f8 and both about 50% crop. F16 would have given better DoF but with diffraction effects:

I've got a little used Sigma 105mm for sale. I'm asking 250 plus postage. It's complete and unmarked.
