Re: photoshop

Post processing effects are highly subject driven and very often down to personal taste. The end result is always based on what the images will be used for. I would hardly ever use "tone mapping" in a competition picture as judges are fed up with seeing them and some competitions have banned the "over manipulated" image.

Subtle effects can often work better than the gross high impact production, but there is also a place for such in certain genres.

One very good place to play with effects filters is Picassa. It's free and completely non destructive.

Do please show us what you are doing.

Re: photoshop

Hi welcome to the forum.

As Graham has said its personal taste with what you're trying to achieve with you're images. I use Photoshop myself and always start by editing in Adobe Camera Raw first to correct exposure, white balance, highlights and shadows, setting the black and white points of the image, noise removal etc. Then take the image into Photoshop to explore the filter menu etc.

The free site to look at for more information is

http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-photoshop-cc/

Here some video links to help you get started.

I hope this helps you.

Re: photoshop

I find myself doing more and more in ACR, the version for Photoshop rather than Elements, which is more basic.

Re: photoshop

Once out of my favourite raw processor I now rarely find myself using PS for anything but compositing multiple images these days as I prefer OnOne Photosuite 8 for that kind of thing.

Re: photoshop

Have a look in the Tutorials part of the forum..

Here's a thread I did detailing my favourite Photoshop tricks, and there's a similar thread there for Elements...
