You beat me to it

Back to the drawing board for Sony, though!

That is not a fair test. The Olympus being so much smaller gets hit by less drips of water...

Re: E M1 passes water test

The manufacturers must have been very confident in their cameras to agree to the tests though!

Obviously over confident in Sony's case.

It's fair as a real world user experience test. If smaller cameras are more resistant to water partly because of their smallness, then that's a factor which buyers might want to take into account.

It's unfair if you're a seal manufacturer of course, and are having - say - 8 inches of seals on one camera compared to 5 insches of seals on another.

This is what their web-site says of the A7Riii (headline quote):

Quote:
Refine your sense of reality with α7R III — an ideal partner offering superior speed, high-resolution imaging, pro-class operability, and reliable performance even under harsh conditions.
Interestingly, a quick internet search will quickly reveal that Sony service won't attempt a repair (even at the owner's cost) if there's water damage.

In any case, the result is hardly surprising in light of this tear-down:

Re: E M1 passes water test

My E-M1 has had a much harder life than that I can tell you with salt water and rain.

Then there was the little amount of water it was subjected to at Niagara.

A little time in the sun at it was dry again and worked throughout

"E M1 passes water test"
If my E-M1 passes water do I take to the dealer or my doctor?

I did once take my E-3 to a public toilet - after me and the camera were both thoroughly drenched by a freak wave. As it had already had a good soaking, I thought it best to rinse the salt off both the camera and lens under a running tap. The E-3 fared rather better than I did; without a change of clothes I was very cold and shivering, with my hands completely numb by the time I got home.

Re: E M1 passes water test

I too got soaked by Sea Water at Portland Bill.

While washing the camera under a tap in the toilet, a man with another camera commented "that's the end of that one"...

"Not a problem!" I replied, it's an Olympus, they are built to take it...

Later in the café, I saw him again and said "All working, perfectly" which it wasn't, because the battery had died in the cold weather...

Re: E M1 passes water test

I remember seeing a video of a four thirds Oly, E5 maybe that showed the camera with flash up under a running tap, the guy holding it firing the shutter, flash firing throughout.
