Question Viewing RAW images in Windows 10 Explorer

OK, so the price reductions on Boxing Day meant I couldn't hold out any longer, and my new MkII should be with me this afternoon to let my MkI find a new home

(I found the MkII + HLD-9 + 3 year extended warranty + an Experience Day on sale at Harrison Cameras for a net 1485 after the 200 cashback deal!)

But it seems that the MkII's RAW images don't show up in the Windows 10 File Explorer like the previous ones! I know I can see them via the Olympus Viewer software and Luminar 2018, but it seems odd that Microsoft haven't caught up yet with a camera that has been around for over a year now

Has anyone found an updated codec that makes them visible?

Re: Viewing RAW images in Windows 10 Explorer

Many years ago I bought the FastPictureViewer codec pack. Nowadays it costs $10 and you get updates forever, as new cameras come out (it supports over 500 cameras including the E-M1 II, and even works with its Hires ORF files). It solves the problem forever. It also includes the option to use extra large icons in File Explorer. It is well worth the $10.

Well spotted, I missed that one; my local dealer too.

A highly recommended shop from my experience; it's probably as well that I missed the offer though to be fair.

Re: Viewing RAW images in Windows 10 Explorer

I believe Faststone Image Viewer might do this for free, but don't have Windows 10 to test it on.

The same applies to the Pen-F. Raw files from my XZ-10 and E-M5 show up fine but the Pen-F ones are just icons.

You can certainly see them in FastStone, but you need the codecs to see them in Explorer (as far as I'm aware, anyway).

The FastPictureViewer codec will make your photos from the Pen F (or any other camera) visible as images in File Explorer.

That is correct. FastStone Viewer is an excellent program, but using it does not answer the original issue, which is being able to view the raw photos in various Windows programs including File Explorer. For that you need to have the codecs installed.

What Mark & Growtiger say.
The FastPictureViewer codec works with file explorer (and other programs such as ExifToolGUI which use the file explorer API).
You can download it here:
https://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/
There is a 15 day free trial - it costs $9.99 thereafter.

Re: Viewing RAW images in Windows 10 Explorer

Quite apart from Oly bringing out new cameras, I find that every now and again MicroSoft issues an update to Win10 that breaks various things, including the ability to see orfs in Explorer.

Every time (to date) I have been able to download the latest set of codecs via the original email from FastPictureViewer and it sorts the problem. So don't delete that email.

Now, I'd just like FastPictureViewer to fix MicroSoft's inability to issue an update that doesn't break the rational layout of icons on my desktop, and then I'd be really happy

That's strange since Windows 7 shows them OK, but maybe it's because I have the Olympus codec installed too.
